I spend a lot of time with a Winchester Model 92 in 357mag. It has a 24" octogon barrel, a white stripe post front sight, and a Lyman receiver sight. Just like my 94 in 3030. I put 10 hot 158gr jacketed soft points in for hogs or coyotes but, the first three up are VERY light loaded 38 special semi-wadcutters. Around 600 fps? They won't shoot very far and that's good, and aren't very loud either. I try never to shoot anything but a head shot and the slow bullet drills a neat little hole right thru the head with almost no other damage. With that peep sight my old eyes can still shoot thumbtacks at 20 yards. When I get in my pickup so does that 92 or the 94.

Since I made this post in August of 2006, I have tried using my Marlin Model 60 with a 2X7 Leupold Vari-XII a little in the woods, and my Ruger 10/22 is always my backyard squirrel gun with a peep sight rear and hi-viz front site. With it, I use CB caps. It protects my pecan trees, and my neighbors ears. ;D
I still have a hard time ever leaving my Model 92 at home. It will take a squirrel with a light loaded 38 special, are the biggest hog rootin with a hot 357 mag 158 jsp.

They are basically a 22 short loaded even lighter. They were I believe originally loaded for indoor shooting, but have about the same power as a really good air rifle. In a long barreled 22 rifle such as my model 60 Marlin they are very quite, but powerful enough to kill a fair size dog with a well placed shot. Usually you can pick them up at a gun store, but some WalMarts may sell them. I buy CCI brand.

Spikehorn;
Those CBs are handy for backyard eliminating if you have near neighbors. They are 29 grains at a bit over 700 fps..and fully as quiet as a good air rifle if you use them in a long barrelled .22, and available in shorts or longs...the longs use the same case as regular long rifles, so they will feed through most manual actions. I use the CCI brand also, but for some weird reason my Walmart only stocks the shorts, so I buy the longs at gunshops.

ironglow, I didn't know they made them in long. Are they just as quite? If so, they would feed in mine?

i have cci long and short cb's.

neither will work the action of most (if any) semi-auto. they work fine in any type of manual action. I don't believe there is any difference in the muzzle energy between the shorts and longs.

as in most every type of .22 ammo, they may not shoot real accurate in your rifle and that is something you will have to check.

years ago i used a cb short made by eley that was a very accurate round and took many squirrels with them in places that i did not feel comfortable using long rifle ammo.

there are even less powerful .22 ammo. i believe bb caps are. i shot a round years ago called hi-score that had a pointed bullet and the case was just about big enough to seat the bullet. it was shorter than a short.

these type rounds would be ideal for an indoor range in the basement where noise may be a problem. they will work in hand fed single shots.

                                             luck!
i should have mentioned that in a long barreled rifle that you can hear the pin strike when you fire these type rounds. the bullets striking flesh will be louder that the report of the rifle.

yea SQUAKS, I have to hand feed both my rifles with the cb caps, but I was thinkin I might be able to just work the bolt with the longs.

Dee:

there is no reason you should not be able to eject the empties manually.

i used them in a 39a lever gun and any bolt will handle the longs. any rifle designed for them will handle the shorts.

i rarely use them as they seem dirtier than good rounds. a model 60 has a rep. for jamming when it gets dirty and if you use cb caps you may have to clean the action more often.

also...i never used tham unless i felt i had no choice. i want a more accurate round for hunting.

                                                    luck!

Both my rifles will eject the empty no problem just by pullin the bolt handle. One is a Model 60 Marlin, and one a 10/22. I usually shot them the most in the Ruger as it has a peep sight, and I keep it handy for my back yard pecan tree raidin squirrels. It's quick, and I just put the front HiViz bead on it, and it hits where the bead is.

then with the longs, you should be able to load up the clip or tube and eject them by hand.

sometimes the action opens part ways.

if yours shoots them accurate, then your lucky!

when my son lived in easten tenn, he had a crow roost behind his house. flights of crows would land in his pine trees and cb caps would do em with no trouble.

i used a rem. 541thb for the job. it did not shoot them real accurate but a close up crow is a big target!

                                                         luck!

I apologize for the late answer Dee. When I spoke of them functioning through a regular magazine, I was speaking about bolt actions..a Marlin, an Anschutz and a CZ. I see no reason why they wouldn't work in the 60 or 10/22, as long as you don't mind operating either one like a bolt action. Most autos of course, require HV long rifles to work the action as self loaders.

Mine is a Ruger 77/22 Mag with Green Mountain barrel and Leupold VX III 4/5 X 14 scope. Some action bedding and trigger work and this little rig is amazing. Remington Premium .22 Mags.
Head shot accuracy out to 100 yds. I sight in at 50 yds and most of my shots are in the 30 to 40 yd range due to the area I am able to hunt.

The little rifle is much more capable than I am on most days.

Kimber Hunter model bolt action with a 3x9 Bushnell scope.  1/2 inch or less at 50 yards.

When I am using a handgun, its usually this Ruger with a 2x Simmons scope.

what  type  of  gun  do  you  like  for   squirrels???  me  i  like  .22  the  best  loaded  with  hollowpoint ccI mini-mags  favorite  squirell  gun  is  a  marlin  model 60  and  a  ruger 10-22

I have hunted these critters with quite a few different items. Currently my favorite choices vary with the seasons...In the fall wehn the leaves are still on the trees I like to use my Brown Bess Carbine Flintlock. She's loaded with 60 grains of ffg, an over powder card, powder measure is used to measure out #6 hard shot and then a over shot card.

In the winter months I use either a .32 calibre percussion or a .45 calibre flintlock. Sometimes its hard to choose which to use, I love them both.

It may take me a little longer to get my limit, but that just means that I get to spend that much more time in the woods.  8)

I picked up a Kimber HS .22 with Leupold 4.5 X 14 VariX III. Very accurate and a joy to own and hunt with.

If I think I'll have clear shots then the 10/22 w/ CCI mini mags. Other wise I like my single barrel .410 w/ 3" 11/16oz loads ( good for brushy areas). Next fall I want to try my Browning BM.

Higene!

What's that tang sight?  I recently bought a Stevens model 30G and was disappointed that it isn't drilled & tapped for peep sight.  I was thinking of a tang sight, and now that I've seen yours I believe I really need to find one.

Winter Hawk,

That is a Marbels tang sight. It is adjustable for windage and elevation. I really like it. They are semi-spendy (I can remember my dad getting a Lyman aperture sight for $7 - so $125 seems expensive - I know - shut up and pay for it grandpa!). There are three post sizes - I didn't know that a put a spacer under the whole sight to make it come out right.

I put a $3 Hi-viz front sight on it also. But I can't see that well and the aperture sight and the green dot work great for me.

CZ 452 American, .22 LR, CZ 513 Basic, .22 LR, Marlin 99 M-1, and Marlin 39A.  I rotate them thru the season and also where I am likely to shoot.  They all have a a certain appeal to me for different reasons.

Ruger 10/22 with heavy bull barrel wearing a 6-18 scope or a Remington 541S with a 2-7 scope. I use CCI SGB exclusively. They are accurate and destroy very little meat while dispatching the game quickly.

For rifles: Early season I use my Polymer stocked Ruger 10-22.  Late season with not a leaf in sight I use my CZ American in .22 Mag with 4 - 12  Simmons Scope.  When using a shotgun it's always a NEF Pardner 12 gauge with 27.5" barrel and 1 oz of 6's.

These days I'm using a CZ 452 Trainer w/ a Weaver 2.5 x 7 scope. Seems to always be able to get 3/8" groups at 50 yds w/ the Winchester 555's.

My grandson (the gunsmith) recently presented me with a brick of  CCI quiets.  Same speed and noise as CBs..but 40gr and more powerful than CBs.
   29grs @ 710fps = 32.5 ft lbs    40 grs @ 710fps = 44.8 ft lbs.

Same case and slug as a LR (it is  actually  a LR), it approaches the CCI standards for accuracy...and I rate CCI standards very highly.  They won't completely cycle my Ruger 10/22 or my Marlin 795..but can be hand cycled.
When you can get them..   http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1301144251/cci-quiet-ammunition-22-long-rifle-40-grain-lead-round-nose

Back to the question..Fav squirrel rifle..
I bought a  Savage 64 semi-auto for "Gun Freedom" day.  I have run only 3-4 magazines through it with original sights..It shows such good accuracy potential that I may make it a dedicated squirrel gun..it can then join my CZ452 which I had my grandson cut & crown from 24.5" to 16.5"
