What's your fav. squirrel gun?
« Reply #90 on: April 04, 2005, 12:05:09 PM »
Early season with leaves on trees, Savage 24 in 22lr/20ga, the perfect squirrel gun.  I keep it on shotgun while walking in the woods if one flushes in the brush or scampers in the trees.  Also good if a rabbit or pheasant flushes.

Once in position switch to 22.  It is no tack driver or range gun but it shoots minute of squirrel out to about 35-50yds.  I often use a squirrel distress call so I keep some 3" buckshot loads on hand in case a coyote or fox comes in.  Hasn't happened yet but hoping some day.

In late season when the leaves are gone and there's snow on the ground it's a 10/22 "T" with 6-20x scope and it becomes a sniper mission.  Have taken clean kills on squirrels in trees to 75t yards and crows at 100.

For next season may consider getting a 17hmr for late season.

Mines a Browning Auto in .22 short with an old Redfield 4X 3/4" scope.  Deadly on squirrels especially when they are in the hickory or pignut.  Oak and beech takes a little more patience.  When the leaves are off a Marlin 981T with Winchester T22's does a good job.

Contender Carbine in 22lr 16 1/4" and a perfect dog.
Best morning with dog was 24 ct. using 22 single shot rifle. Shotguns are not a choice even though the harvest would be higher.

Only saw one squirrel all darn morning. There's a bit of sign under the trees. Still it is never wasted just spending time out in the woods. Did have a 6 point buck in velvet and four does walk in on me and I do bow hunt in those woods.    Hoping next weekend they will cooperate a tad better

You know when I was a teenager a friendÂ’s mother(his father had died when he was young) couldnÂ’t understand how us kids could spend the whole day out in the mountains and come home without firing a shot and say it was a great day.  She used to shake her head like she had given birth to something other than human.  Lawdog

Contender Carbine

3 with 16 1/4" barrels
1 with the 21" match

Can not tell the difference in performance except I have been told that you should not try to shoot stingers in the match barrel. The brass is cut in the throat by the  lands/Grouves. Not sure that this is good for it.

My personal favorite is my Revelation bolt action 410ga shotgun. Lighter and eaiser to carry than a semiautomatic 22 plus there is just something satisfing about workin the bolt after laying a tree rat low.

I got a Kimber Hunter a few years ago, and it quickly became my favorite squirrel rifle. I topped it with a Burris 3x9 Rimfire AO and I use Wolf Match Target ammunition. This rig ahs accounted for many squirrels aroung my east Tennessee home.

Another vote for the savage model 24.  Mine is .22 on top and 410 below and so old it didn’t come with a scope rail.  I had to have one welded to the top of .22 barrel.  It presently has a red dot on it and still whacks them there tree rats.  Shoots them setting and shoots them running.

Either my 10/22 or model 60, with CCI Subsonics, when the leaves are on the trees.  After the leaves are down, I breakout my CZ 452 in HM2.  I'm shocked that only one other post has mentioned this cartridge.

I just may have a new favorite -- I picked up a Colt Woodsman (made in 1938, with after-market micro sights) for $225.  In it's first shooting session, it didn't like hollowpoints, but fed solids beautifully and shot more accurately than any other .22 pistol I have -- and that's saying a lot.

I use Remington .22LR Golden or CCI 22 SHORT LRN for my .22 and  Remington Nitro Pheasant Premier that i got when Kmart closed near were i like. I have not use them on squirrel yet but have shot a lot of rats and one ferret with them. I like my crosman 2200 with dasiy wadcut for them out to 40 yards it a .22 cal. airgun.

I spend a lot of time with a Winchester Model 92 in 357mag. It has a 24" octogon barrel, a white stripe post front sight, and a Lyman receiver sight. Just like my 94 in 3030. I put 10 hot 158gr jacketed soft points in for hogs or coyotes but, the first three up are VERY light loaded 38 special semi-wadcutters. Around 600 fps? They won't shoot very far and that's good, and aren't very loud either. I try never to shoot anything but a head shot and the slow bullet drills a neat little hole right thru the head with almost no other damage. With that peep sight my old eyes can still shoot thumbtacks at 20 yards. When I get in my pickup so does that 92 or the 94.

Just bought the Marlin heavy barrel 17 Mach 2 rimfire.  Put my Simmons Prairiemaster scope on it (4-16x 50mm) One hole groups at 25 and 50 yards. Can't wait to get it out.   8)

Its got to be my savage model 9417.  Man that .17 slams them squirrels hard.  If not that my reworked Mossberg 500 .410  I've had the choke opened up to light Mod, the forcing cone reworked, and the barrel burnhished.  This small bore shotgun shoots really really good now.

As GB said, this is a long running thread..and it really seems to me to point out how widespread the joy of hunting old bushytail is.
It also demonstrates that we hunt him under apparently very diverse conditions. For instance, I use .22 LR..many use .22 mag or a shotgun, while some opt for the .17 HMR, and though I do not yet own one; the new .17 II seems to be ideal for head shots at moderate ranges.

This seems to show that there are real differences in cover and ranges at which we are harvesting these tree rats !

Now I will throw a new wrench into the works:

WHY DO YOU USE THE GUN/CALIBER YOU USE ?

OK; I'll start..I use my .22 LR because I like the precision of a rifle and most of my squirrel hunting is in the 35-50 yard ranges.
Also...I hate to bite into pellets and hair when I eat some squirrel...

That is not to put anyone else down..just my .02 cts..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)
