Zachary,

You and I agree on that point.  Makes judging distance very important.  The peep sight on the M-1 Garand is fine for what it was designed for but for varmints at extended ranges I don't think so.  A ground squirrel at 300 yards is hard enough to see with a scope let alone through a peep sight.  If 'dragthewaters' wants a deer/varmint/target rifle then I suggest he look into a .243 Win., 6mm Rem., .257 Roberts or even a .25-06 Rem..  Of course this will mean he will need to get into reloading to keep the cost down.  Yes you CAN use a .270, .30-06 or a .308 for varmints but they weren't really designed for that use.  Heck I know of a guy who uses a .45-70 on ground squirrels but them ground rats are really hard to stop when they charge.  Dangerous too.  Pawn shops are a great place to get a good deal on rifles BUT take someone along that really knows rifles or it's buyer beware time.  Lawdog

I also shoot cast, military surplus and premium bullets in it.After I shoot the rifling out I plan on putting a Douglas XX 26" medium weight barrel in it.By the way,it is a Kimber of Oregon Super American. And NO,I would not take $2,000.00 for it!

Dragthewaters - To answer your question, ALL of the calibers mentioned are suitable for deer hunting.  You can't go wrong with any of them.  My recommendation would be to get a 308, 270 or 30-06.  The 308 has the benefit of less recoil and mil surplus ammo available, so it will offer the cheapest practice ammo.  You will still have to buy quality hunting ammo and practice with that as well.

The 270 and 30-06 have the benefit of being available everywhere and they are typically the 2 that go on sale the most (along with the 30-30).  This means you can hit Walmart when they are having a sale and stock up on your favorite ammo.   In the same weight guns, the 308 will have the least recoil, with the 270 next and the 30-06 will have the most.  This should be taken into account since you might be inclined to practice more with a gun that isn't punishing you at the bench!

Most companies are producing decent rifles these days.  Just pick the one that FEELS the best to you and fits your budget.  The cheap scopes that come on the package guns will be just fine until you can save up for a better scope.  Lots of people use these cheap scopes for many, many years and are perfectly happy with them.  There is no need to spend $300 on a scope just yet!

Good luck with your search and purchase! ... Crayfish

7MM-08, 280 Rem or 30-06 are all good cals...as for the rifle, look at the Savage, any model.....i have a few of them and you can believe what is said about them...probably the most accurate rifle off the shelf....and one of the least expensive.....

Is a Howa Hunter in .30-06 @ $289 new a good deal?

I put one on lay-away today but have 90 days to think it over in case I have second thougts. Have heard many good things about Howa and the price seemed attractive.

Thanks.

Well you have 90 days to look at other rifles but for the price and the fit/feel of the howa I would keep it. :D   JIM

I'd go with the Rem.  Don't be afraid to buy a used gun either. If you know someone who has some knowledge of bolt actions and their worth, take them with you to check it out. I recently bought a Rem 600 in fairly good shape for $325.00 and it shoots about 3/4" groups.

I just bought a howa.  You can get the synthetic with a blued barrel real reasonable, but for around $400 you can get the howa with the boyds laminated stock and blued barrel.  It is a good looking gun.  for a few dollars more you can get a stainless barrel. If you want to check one out look at auctionarms.com and search by item #4895307.  This is a great rifle.  270 cal new in box for $399.  The guy selling it is who I bought mine from and he was great.

practice, practice. breathe, breathe, breathe. my .02
odds are with the prepared.....

Man Catman, it sounds like you got yourself one heck of back yard!  I wish I had a yard like that....sure would beat having to go to the gun range on the other side of town.

Get yourself a 30-06 rifle, there running pretty cheap in my neck of the woods.Pawn shops have a surplus of them and any sport shop have a
bundance of them. And as far as ammo goes thats running cheap too. 8)
