Every year in Colorado's Mt Zirkel Wilderness! I've been sittin em down since 1988 with my TC Contender 35 Remington and 375JDJ. I wish I'd started sooner. This since we back-pack in., and back-pack the meat out. This year will most likely be with my Encore in 15" 30'06 or 338-06. Ive also used 30'06 and 300 win mag rifles. I don't carry rifles hunting anymore. It's just a personal choice. My 375JDJ Elk, 315B/C was taken at an honest 175yds. The 4x4 35 Rem kill was about 125 yds.  I live for Elk.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

My son, Brad, and I are going on our first elk hunt this fall. In the same area we usually hunt mule deer. Normally we see a lot of elk while deer hunting out there.
I plan on using my 480 Blackhawk the first few days, then if I still don't get a close shot, I'll switch over to my 30-06. Brad plans on buying a 300 Ultramag instead of using his 8mm Mauser.

I have been hunting elk in Oregon, Roosevelt and Rockly Mtn, for 30+ years.  Have hunted them with bow and rifle.  Bow is Bear Compound and have used 30-30, .308 Win, 30-06, 8x57 and 45-70 rifles when hunting.  Have been with friends who have killed elk with everything from .257 Roberts to .375 H&H.  I prefer the 30-06.  Was a LEO in NE Oregon for 18 years and had the opportunity to dispatch numerous injured deer and elk with a multitude of rifle and handgun cartridges.

I elk hunt every year in the foothills of the Oregon Cascades. I hunt the Snow Peak area. Beautiful country and lots of animals. I hunt with an Interarms 30-06 that used to belong to my grandpa. I would rather hunt elk than any other animal in North America. Can't wait till October!

I am in the north, Columbia River Gorge.  I have never hunted anywhere else, everything is here.  Got my first Elk 2 weeks after getting my first hunting rifle, a sporterized P-17.  Took a beautiful 5x6 at 400+.  Beginners luck I suppose.  But then I am 5 for 6 so maybe it isnt luck.  I love Elk hunting here.  The views from up in the hills are spectacular in the morning.  I have also taken a few from orchards.

Since I live in Wyoming I hunt them here but usually also go down and hunt Non-Resident in Colorado. I used to shoot a 338 but got tired of the pounding I was taking and got rid of it. Now I shoot a 270 and have taken several with it and haven't had to do much tracking yet.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

My first assumption was you were on two different hunts.  However, it's not quite what you said, so if that's your "story", and you're sticking to it, then there must be some "rest of the story".  Please tell us the rest as there must be some humor in there.

I'd love to, but so far I've not seen so much as a track, there's no season here, and the elk have just been re-introduced

Easy there boys, those of us lucky enough to live in MT and ID get to hunt BOTHElk and deer at the same time in some units on a resident tags. BTW that time includes deer (both whitetail and mulies), elk, and black bear.  Pretty much if it has four feet and isnt a moose shoot it.

Another oregon elk hunter here.  Id rather hunt elk than anything else.  I hunt the cascades, and when im lucky enough to draw, eastern oregon, just outside of John Day.  So far i have killed elk with a 30-06 and a 300 win mag, but i recently sold the 300 win mag in order to buy a 35 whelen which should be a real elk hammer.  Time will tell, hopefully this year as im itchin to kill something with it.  Hard to get an elk much deader than the old 30-06 will do though...

No gentlemen, I don't need pictures of what an elk looks like! I was trying to fill my elk tag, but saw the muley buck and had a tag so said "what the hell." After all deer meat is better than no meat. Maybe I'll get my elk this season.

I only hunt here in Arizona and for elk it's drawing only, no over the counter permits.  It can really be a while between being drawn.  However the hunts are excellent.  My last one was a couple of years ago, a 6x6 bull with a traditional muzzleloader.

This year I will be applying for archery bull and cow.  I went too many years applying for the general (rifle/pistol) hunts where you chances are a lot less than the archery or muzzleloader hunts.

However I don't feel that there is any particular advantage or disadvantage between the muzzleloader or rifle hunts based upon the type of weapon.  The archery hunts are a bit more difficult, but certainly not that difficult to get in close enough.

The Arizona regulations are out now and the applications must be entered before the closing date during the second week of June.  Then usually around the 4th of July holiday the results are posted and the planning begins.  The regulations are on the Arizona Game and Fish website at:
http://www.azgfd.com/  and you can apply on line there as well

The area, unit 6A, that I hunt in is between Camp Verde and Flagstaff and is Ponderosa pine forests and cedar/juniper range lands.  Usually see pleanty of elk, often times very close and personal (like close enough to bounce a stone off their nose), unfortunatly that happens while accompanying someone with a tag when you were not drawn.

:D I like hunting elk . There is no season where I live so I head out west. I like to apply for as good an area as I can since it cost about the same to  hunt a good area as an average or poor area. I'll use whatever weapon is legal for that zone or time period. At home I hunt deer with bow muzzleloader and rifle/handgun so I don't think the weapon is that important. I didn't get a tag this year but I"ll keep trying. :sniper:
