I BOUGHT A NEW WINCHESTER TRAPPER, IN 45 COLT. AS A COMPANION PIECE FOR A GOOD SHOOTING, RUGER BISLEY. THE TRAPPER WOULD SHOOT FOUR INCH GROUPS AT 50 YARDS WITH SCOPE AND SAND BAGS. NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND, FOR SWAMP HUNTING.
I TINKERED WITH IT FOR A WHOLE SUMMER, I EVEN CALLED WINCHESTER, AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NOT DESIGNED TO BE A TARGET RIFLE, AND IT WAS MADE FOR COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING!

TRADED THAT SUCKER OFF QUICK!
ONE TIME I BOUGHT A MINI 14 SS WITH A CLARK BARREL STABELIZER, SCOPE, AND TRIGGER JOB. FIRST RANGE TRIP YEILDED EIGHT INCH VERTICAL STRING. THE STABELIZER WAS BOTTEMED OUT ON THE GAS BLOCK, WHEN FIXED, IT SHOT ABOUT 1.5 INCH FIVE SHOT GROUPS, BUT CHEWED BRASS SO BAD I TRADED IT OFF TOO!
MY ACCURACY WANTS ARE PRETTY HIGH, BUT I'M LUCKY MOST OF THE TIME. AND THE NICE THING IS, EVEN IF I GET A STINKER SOME TIMES, I LIKE THE TRADING GAME, WITH THE LOCAL FLEA MARKET GUYS. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOUR GONNA FIND, OR GET!

I'd have to go with Ruger as the most inaccurate factory rifles. Don't get me wrong, the M77 bolt guns are probably some of the most reliable guns out there, but I've never had one that would shoot anywhere close to a factory stock CZ (made in the last few years or so) or Savage. Not only are Ruger model 77s not so accurate, everything from their Number 1s to factory stock 10/22s are the same. They do a little better with their Mark II and III pistols, but it's not enough to keep Ruger from wearing the crown of most inaccurate factory guns. :)

Although I've always owned and been happy with Rem 700, many years ago I bought a Rem 7400. Except for the gun never holding zero (even after bringing it to 3 gunsmiths and changing the scope 3 times), the magazine falling out every so often and having to carry a screw driver to clear the jams (every so often) it wasn't a bad looking rifle. yes I cleaned the rifle and all of that good stuff. After missing a 10 pointer at 50 yards I traded it in for a new 700 (which has givin me pure joy and meat each year).

What I find the most interesting about this thread is the number of Savages mentioned versus........say the number of Rugers and Remmys. Kinda makes ya go Hmmmmmmm.

Over the years i `ve owned a lot of rifles made by different companies
and to tell the truth i`ve never had a problem.
Most all have had scopes and when sighted-in have they`ve done the
    job.
I`m not a gun-range rat (no offense) so i don`t need all my shots to go
into the same hole.  If i`m happy that`s all that counts.

Ruger Mini-14 was by far the worst.  I replaced it with a HB Bushmaster that shoots .5 inch 5 shot groups at 100.  Worst yet - Everyone tells ruger they want a HB option and Ruger won't listen.  Their loss and Bushmasters gain.

This is kind of interesting stuff. It is what I recommend folks do when shopping for a rifle ... take a look at the pros and cons on these forums. So far it looks like Ruger has the most negative posts with 16, followed by Remington with 11, then lumping all military rifles into one catagory the military bunch comes in at six negative reports, followed by Winchester with five negative reports, then Savage and H&R Handi each with two reports, followed by Sako, Marlin, CZ, Rossi and Thompson Center Contender, each with one negative report.

Before thinking too much about the result of this informal poll , don't forget that remington also probably sold more rifles than all of those Cz, contenders, sakos combined and has probably sold more than anyone else and definielty more than Savage. If you base the numbers of complaints with the actual percentage of ownership Remington and ruger may acutally be very good. its like trying to compare the number of complaints Jaguar gets versus General Motors. Ain't going to be an accurate measure, since everyone has owned a GM and everyone who owns Jaguar can probably afford to maintain it real well even if its a POS.

For the record my worst bolt gun was a Cz 550 in .308 which I have actually gotten down to about2-3 inches at a 100 yds when cold and expect to improve further after I glass bed it. Got the kit and waiting for the time to do it. Gun used to shoot about 6-7 inches. Now shoots almost the same as a stock Remington 700 BDL SS which I also plan to play with. Take care.

foto: your exception is noted. but it does not change my mind one iota. the results are still interesting. too bad you got a CZ that didn't shoot to your expectations. i'll still put my money with CZ as i have had nothing but good fortune with them and the people i know who bought them have had exceptional shooting rifles as well. I've said it many times here...new rifles made today...in the under 600 / 800 dollar range ....u pay your money & takes your chances....I've seen them all good & bad...he asked for the most inaccurate...I swear some days there is no quality at all in american products....Rifles scopes mounts....all expensive enough u would think the standards of quality would be higher...Not the case....I'm sold on savage for one reason...If the factory barrel is a dog u can change it yourself..or buy a beater action & put a quality barrel on it...not cheap doing it right, trigger stock barrel..but u can turn that sows ear into a silk purse that can shoot !!! Lots of good aftermarket parts available & u get the satisfaction of doing it yourself...one mans opinion...mike in ct

Yup, I agree that the information being collected here is anecdotal. ( I try to learn a new word every day) Every company builds accurate rifles and some real bummers. My gunsmith said a customer brought in a very expensive custom rifle because he couldn't chamber factory ammunition in it. The rifle came with a test target showing a .40 group at 100 yards. The smith checked out the rifle and found they hadn't finish reamed the chamber!! So, there you are. To really test rifles, you would need to buy a bunch of each make right off the gunshop rack, test each rifle with several different makes of ammo and use the best ammo for each rifle to determine group size. Then get an average of group sizes for that bunch of rifles. Repeat the whole thing for each make tested. You can see why they aren't doing that kind of testing. My neighborhood gun shop owner says just forget it and buy Savage/Stevens or Tikka/Sako and you'll be fine.

I just got out of the service in '70 and deer hunting season was just around the corner. There was a add in the classifids for a 7mm mauser
for $50 dollars.WOW did that rifle look nice, not a ding any where,it was all
polish up and the guy said he just sporterized it.He forgot to mention he
never crowned the barrel.Well to make this story shorter.I bought that rifle for $35 and could'nt hit the side of a barn.I shot at everything that
moved and could'nt hit anything. You talk about a pist off person,I was it.
Just thinking about that gun makes me kind of laugh.I can't remeber what
I ever did with that gun. 8)
I'm not in VietNam anymore,so get someone else to walk point.('69-'70)

regarding foto's post from 4/12, you make a good point, but i was recently looking at another thread asking for factory rifle for one "life-saving shot" straight from the box with factory ammo (or something equally silly). again, strictly anectdotal basis but interesting anyway. the overall winner? Tikka by a large margin. yeah, Remington has sold more rifles (at least in the US), but there has to be a reason for that kind of confidence.

BTW, my least accurate rifle ever was/is a Rossi matched pair .22lr; or maybe a Krag carbine .30-40.

We had one centerfire that had to go back to the factory. It was solved perfectly to my satisfaction and returned in a reasonable amount of time. It was an Encore barrel in .223. Fortunately I got it well before the prairie dog hunt I bought it for. It just needed to be re-crowned and now it shoots great.

T/C stands behind their products.  That was the only problem I've ever had with a T/C product (and I've given them plenty of opportunities to fail.)

I used to trade, buy and borrow rifles of different calibers, makes and models. I have seen some cheap rifles shoot like a house of fire namely a 788 in .22/250 and 6mm. I have had beautiful rifles shoot lowsey a Ruger No.1 in 45/70 and .270. I have a pre '64 30/06 that makes me grin when I get under 2 inches. and you Savage friends the best thing savage had was the 99 and it's gone. Bring it back as it is better than the bolt...and really learn how a five shot group is measured. Te rifles that were most consistant were the Remingtons and Sako I had one bad Sako and two Remingtons. As to Warthogs "green boxes" he may ought to take a peak at them now since the green is gone. I shoot them all and load for them too.
