Author Topic: Remington Model 141 Gamemaster (Read 8142 times)

Today I finally got a rifle I have wanted for quite a while. I bought a 141 in 35 Remington that is in really nice original condition. The wood is almost perfect, the metalwork and bluing is clean, and the bore is excellent. The rifle does have a Weaver K2.5-C3 scope mounted in Weaver mounts. I haven't shot the rifle yet, but can't wait to get this old girl on the range. I'll give her a good going-over, clean the barrel, and lube first. These old pump guns just have an appeal to me. Anyone shoot one of these?

I inherited one of these. Will have it next week! Hard to believe I never shot it but I will, and report back! :-D

Absolutely! Beautifully built guns. I love mine. It has a Pachmeyer swing away scope mount, looks cool, and holds the zero to an acceptable level. I shot a 9 point in 1999. It was running and the first shot took off a patch of skin about 4 inches square above his shoulder. I wouldn't have got the second shot with any other gun, accept a semi auto. I put it away for several years, them seriously hunted with it season before last. shot a 8 point. The gun carries extrememly well, points like a finger, and is fast as lightning. The designer was a genious. I'd say on par with John Browning when it comes to ergonomics. Very high in cool factor. I love mine. I'd love one in all the Remington calibers.

It is great to hear from other 141 lovers. This rifle just "fits" me so well, I am really looking forward to hunting with it. I still haven't got to the range, but will this Saturday if not before.

What ammunution do you shoot in yours? I'm leaning toward the classic 200 grain round nose from Remington or Federal, but I bought a box of thr new Hornady Lever Evolution 200 grain ammo at the gunshop when I picked the rifle up. I intend to reload for this rifle as soon as I get a die set.

I shoot the 200 grain Remington stuff. Haven't had a problem. Shoots fine. The Hornady stuff looks pretty darn good. The price is reasonable for a "Premium" ammo. The classic 200 grain roundnose is hard to beat. It really seems to hammer the critters.

One neat thing about the 14 / 141 models is they can handle pointed bullets, but no one makes any. The spiral tube makes the points offset from the primer.

Great guns, point like a shotgun.

The Hornady ammo I mentioned uses a 200 grain spitzer bullet similar to a Ballistic Tip. Hornady states they are safe to use in leverguns with tubular magazines, so the 141 presents no problems.The box says 2225 fps with standard pressure. I don't know how the 141 will shoot it, but this looks like a good load with more power and a bit more range that the round nose Remingtons and Federals.

I've seen the ads for the Hornady stuff. I meant to say the 200 grain roundnose in the other factory loads is very effective, as it is. There's something about the large frontal area presented by the old round noses that lays the wood.
The Hornady stuff looks like good news for the 35. I hope it sells well, and performs better. The 24" barrel of the 141 should let it shine. It has a rubberized pointed tip that makes it safe in a standard tube.

Range report:

This afternoon I finally got the 141 on the range for the first time. The range is only 50 yards, but I thought I could get her on paper. After a few shots to get the scope adjusted, The 3 shot groups were nice 3/4" clover leafs. Pretty good for me with a 2.5x scope and an elderly pump gun. I'll try 100 yards as soon as I can get to another range. I think this rifle will make meat. :grin:

I bought a 141 in 35 Remington when I was stationed at Wurtsmouth AF Base, Michigan in the mid-1970's. It had a folding tang sight and diamond shaped ivory bead. From a makeshift rest at about 100 yards, I could nail an empty beer can nearly every time.

The spiral magazine always intrigued me and I've often wondered why Marlin never leased the patent rights?

I shot two bucks with it in two seasons. Both deer were neither huge nor small. Just avergae 175 lb on the hoof whitetails. The 35 did its part when I did mine. I sold the rifle for what I paid when I headed overseas to S. Korea. Sold it for $150. So it goes. But I hope that whoever owns it now is a hunter and not a collector. This is a hunter's rifle!

I agree with you, the 141 is a HUNTER'S RIFLE, pure and simple. I intend to hunt whitetail deer with mine this winter. I am really liking this pump gun.

I finally got to the range with mine and 100 yard groups were very consistent 2" with 3 shots. I was using the Hornady ammo, which shoots well enough, but it is just a bit too long to work through the spiral magazine. I could load one in the mag and one in the chamber with this round.

I am now handloading the 35 Remingtom with 200 grain RNCLs and they load fine in the mag. I haven't got to the range with this load, but I am hoping it will shoot well from the 141. The 2.5X scope makes 100 yard shooting a little challenging for my 50+ year old eyes.

My cousin has one thatwas her dads and our grandfather bought it new (probably in the 1920's-30's). This one was chambered in 30 Rem. Granddad shot many a deer with it and this gun put much illigal venison on the table during the depression and WW2. My grandfather was a stikler for taking good care of guns and I believe my uncle had to have the barrel recrowned from so much cleaning with steel rods. My uncle (like his father) was a poor farmer so this was his only deer rifle and he kept it in top shape. I never shot it because by the '70s ammo was hard to come by but the little bit that I handeled it it was easy to see why both generation owners loved that gun. Last fall I was drooling over one in 35 Rem. at a local gun shop. This one had a peep sight that would soot my middle aged eyes better than the iron sights. I realy wished I had the $$ to take that gun home but alas, I have a daughter starting college and besides I've already got my dads 300 Savage to satisfy my need for a fine deer rifle. However, I still lust for one of those Gamemasters.

What a great gun! Handles easy, points automatically.
This has a flip down scope to allow use of irons.
I was going to just enshrine it but I'm gonna have to use it!

By all means, shoot that sucker. It will be almost spiritual being your Dad's gun. Great guns, almost worthy of "reprodution"!

Would really like to some some more model 25's (25-20 and 32-20)

Absolutely shoot that grand old rifle. I intend to make meat with mine. There is just something special about carrying a nice vintage firearm into the woods and using it for its intended purpose. I don't know the histort of mine, but my sons will when I hand it over to them. I'm going to make a little history of my own with this 141. Shoot, any firearm of my dad's is a treasure to use.

I have a Modle 14 that is just like all the other post a dream to hunt with I ve not connected with it but sooner or later it'll happen just glad to see so many 14/141 fans out there. I inherited it from my oldest brother an the joy he had in that old gun bring him right back to me.. Bob

I also have a Model 14, as well as a 14 1/2. The .35 is a fine caliber no matter where you are. I use mine in the deep forests of CA.

I just got my 1st 141 and really like it. I was going to go the way of a vintage weaver but after trying one out went with a new 2x7x32 Nikon Prostaff, guess I too use to modern glass and its going to be a hunting gun. I have not had a chance to get it to the range yet but have some Hornady, Remington and Winchester 200 gr loads to try out to see what the old girl likes best.

I will give a range report when I can

Remington makes 150 gr ammo for the .35 Remington and it is a pointed soft point bullet.

I shot many a buck and doe with that round and it is very accurate out to 150 yards.

as far as a old Weaver Scope goes, I would get rid of it and replace it with what ever your budget allows.

Even a new Simmons or Bushnell is better than a 40 + year old Weaver.

You are right on in regards to the Weaver........... I wound up putting a 2x7x32 Nikon on and it seems to fit the gun well.

Still looking for a nice one if any of you come across one.

I have a Remington Model 141 1937, My grandfather purchased this gun new, gave it to his son, then my father gave it to me. This gun has killed more deer than I can count and is deadly accurate - the furthest I have shot accurately is 150 yards. It is an amazing deer rifle in that if you can see it chances are better than good that you will be having deer for dinner. This gun has seen Deer season in Michigan every year since it was purchased along with a vintage Coleman 530 stove to take the chill off the fingers, what more could you ask for.

here are two cousins to the 14-141,s, two 14-1/2,s. the top one is a 38-40 and the bottom one is a 44-40, both are still used to hunt,but only with lead bullets, with modest reloads. both are in very good condition with ex bores and work as they should. eastbank.

I picked up a 141 Gamemaster made in 1945 chambered 35 Rem, I'm very pleased with the groups it is printing, somewhat tighter than a new Marlin 336 35 Rem and a 2005 manufactured Win 94 30-30. Mine seems to only hold four rounds in the spiral magazine tube, what about yours?

TN , if your 141 was in "Original" condition it wouldn't be drilled and tapped for a Scope ! I have two 141s in 35 Cal and absolutely love them . One is a full length Rifle with a Weaver pivot mount , and the other I bought online( GB) , someone was evidently making a Carbine out of it as the Barrel has been shortened to 18" but it had no sights ! I put a Rem. 760 Ramp sight on the front and a modified peep from a T/C omega on the rear . When I test fired it , much to my surprise and pleasure it was dead nuts on at 50 Yds . Since I will probably not use it for anything except Bear with Hounds , it's perfect . The Hornady LeverEvoloution shoots great out of both of them , and so do my handloads !
