I prefer lower powered lights myself. My primary spotlight is a Brinkman "Mini Q-Beam". I paint the lense with a few coats of a red Marks-A-Lot marker, and it works great.

Most of your shots will be, and should be for safety under 100 yards at night time. It's very easy even with a very dim light to see eyes out there at several hundred yards. When they're within 100 yards or less, again, it doesn't take a very bright light to see plenty good enough to put the crosshairs where they need to go.

Too much light, red or not, will end up spooking animals that otherwize would've come on in to your calling.

I just about popped my sisters Malamute one morning.
that would have been ugly... It had gotten out of the pen and
was running around the lower field like a crazy animal
(It was happy to be free for a while).

Break

If you use a spot light hold it to where its just over their head and you can still see them plain enough to identify what you are looking at and it will not bother them as some would have you belive. I use a landing light which is a powerful light and have had them come right up to the pick up.

I am just getting intereted in this night hunting.  I see a lot of commerial lights that connect to the scope.  Are they any good?  If I am alone or we both want to hunt at the same time, my friend I mean, is it worth the extra price?

Also is there any place that I can go on the net to research this type of hunting?  thanks.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Larry- I have been trying various set-ups for light and have not settled on one. To preditor hunt, I want a light rifle and a scope adds weight and so does a light on top of the scope. It also adds bulk and a cord that I don't want. Jerry Lester writes that he uses a mini-Q beam for light. I have never seen one, but it sounds interesting. If you find a good set-up let us know what it is. The rechargeable spot light seem bulky to me also.
If you have a hunting partner you are in luck, one calls and lights while the other shoots. It is funny how few people want to be on the ground calling a preditor in at night. It is even funnier when they do and the coyote sneaks in and is standing there watching only a few yards away when the light hits them. I really don't  think about it often, but some night I will probably call in a bear. Now that will make the hair stand up on my neck
I hunt by myself. :)  :)
