Rechamber the .243 Winchester 6mm Remington
« on: December 15, 2005, 01:33:00 PM »
Has anyone here tried to Rechamber the .243 winchester to a 6mm remington?
That would be of interest to me as I prefer the 6mm.

 How bout it?

Looking at the drawings, it's questionable whether the 6mm would clean up the .243 chamber. How bout a 6mmAI...

The 6x.284 sure looks like it would be an improvement, but don't know about the rebated rim....

from what i've read (not too much) the 6mm-ai will clean up the old 243 chamber . i've been thinking about when the throat goes on my 243 barrel that i'll either go with the 6mm-ai or 6mm-284ai (finish off the barrel) .

it would only be about a $50 rechamber to have it done .
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

I had a 243 barrel rechambered to 6mmRem AI (AKA 244AI).

The rechamber was no problem for my smith but he's gone now.  He also recut the floating part of my redding collett seater die with the same reamer; if you go to the 244AI you'll need to consider the cost of dies into the equation or you might be in for a rude surprise.  The cheapest and best way to go would be to have a set of die blanks cut with the same reamer, like a set of L. E. Wilson blanks.

My advice is that unless you can do your own machine work stick with the 243.

Yeah, the others beat me to it. 6mm won't clean up a .243 chamber; 6 AI will. What's the rifle? Barrel change might not be prohibitive.

Don't have the rifle at this point, but was considering the .243 Ultra. I have a (close your eyes Quickdtoo ) Ruger M77 6mm Remington that I truly love, and was thinking of how nice a companion NEF 6mm rem would be.
It's one of those days when I'm iced in, and all I've had to do is shoot 2 crows down in the river-bottom while setting and looking out my basement window with one eye on the computer.

so would the 6mm-284 work in the 243 barrel?
I just don't get all tingly over the 243 I bought in a Rem 798 but I do like the performance numbers.

Tim - what reloading dies are you using?  Has extraction been any better or worse than the original 243 win?  Thanks for the info!

Hornady Custom, I also have their hydraulic forming die, I've never had a problem with ejection after tuning the ejector and polishing the chamber(FAQs) unless the chamber was dirty cuz I forgot to wipe it out after cleaning at the range or a handload was too hot.
