A little cheaper, but I would guess the Sharpshooter's stock may be better for bedding and reinforcment near the recoil lug.

For the sharpshooters, the out of mold prices are not too bad. I will look into what else needs to be done to the stock besides painting.

Part of the price difference is in this statement from the SSS site:

"An internal aluminum skeleton with contoured pillars and recoil block are added for extra rigidity."

SSS paints the stock to your specs after you order.

Depending on your usage, this may or may not be necessary.

My problem is that the custom job costs, three times as much as I paid for the rifle, and the Ramline stock doesn't fit the "J" action. I guess I bought my rifle too soon.

170 for an unpainted stock seems OK to me. Not dirt cheap, but less than half of the original cost of the gun. My hesitation is because I still would not have an acutrigger.

Yes, I was aware of the aluminium bedding in the SSS stock. That is what is appealing to me. I would get one unpainted, and just put a simple paint job on it myself. I dont want something sexy or flashy like the benchrest shooters have. I want something I can bang around in my tree stand and sling over my shoulder in the woods. My hunting gun will not be babied, not abused, but it must be servicable in the field subjected to the elements. This is one reason I like the ugly savage stock. However, the bad finish on it doesnt handle dings very well, it chips.

With that, is there a durable paint for synthetic stocks, or just re-apply

If your problem with the stock is the flimsy front end you can fix that with a $10 can of 2 part marine epoxy, some paste wax, a piece of 3/4" pvc and a little dremmel tool work.
I am about to do this to the above mentioned rifle. Might take pictures as I go along and post them.

The SSS stocks are sweet! I have one of the tactical models on my 300 wm - sounds expensive till you compare it to a McMillian.
