I have a Contender 45-70 pistol. The barrel length is almost 17 1/2 " with the muzzle tamer.I can legally make it a carbine, right?

Seems like if the muzzle tamer is permanently affixed, then yes, you can make it a carbine.

If is an unmodified T/C factory barrel, yes you can. I have such a barrel on my rifle Contender frame and like it better than as a pistol barrel. It does possess some recoil though..... :eek:

I bought the barrel new over 20 years ago, shoots very well as a pistol. It came with the muzzle tamer on it. Without it, it's still 16 " barrel and that would be legal too? ( it doesn't come off)

YES it would,my encore sports a 18" katdahin barrel with compisator and my mine hog thumper its over all length isis 32" and quite compact, and hard hitting I love the thing, thinking about getting a 375 winchester barrel for it next , those staight walled cases are fun, then a 357 max and......... I'm having way to much fun its scarry. kjg

Yep, I have a 14" 357 Max too, it and my 7mm-08 Encore pistol will be my deer weapons this year........

Here's how it breaks down. If the brake is removable (threaded barrel), then the OAL to the end of the threads must be at least 16" regardless of how much length the brake adds when it is screwed on the barrel. However, if the brake is permanently attached (red or blue loc-tite does not qualify as permanent), the you measure to the end of the brake to get your OAL. As long as its over 16", you are OK.

But, you can register the frame as a short barreled rifle, and legally use any barrel length you want. However, this takes about 3-4 months, a CLEO sign off, and $200. Oh yeah, you have to live in a Class III friendly state!
