Need Information
« on: November 04, 2005, 01:47:22 AM »
Although my questions most likely have been asked before, I will ask for help on three questions regarding an older Winchester 94, 30-30.

My son-in-law inherited this rifle from his grandfather and I saw it once a couple of years ago and know it is pre-safety and is in excellent condition.  He wants to mount a scope on this and is aware of the top ejection feature and the necessity of a side mounted scope.  I never would mount a scope on this rifle but he is determined.

My questions are:
1.)  How can he determine the age of the rifle?
2.)  Are side mounted scopes on a 94 accurate and dependable?
3.)  Is it possible to mount a scope on the barrel ahead of the receiver
similar to a "scout" type model?

Yes, you can trace the manufacturing date of your winchester 94 by the serial nunber.  Try John Spangler's site at www.oldguns.com

Side mounted scopes were for the longest time the only option for 'scoping an M94.  Weaver used (still does?) make a tip-off mount that attaches to a rail base screwed to the left side of the receiver.

Scout-type scopes with long eye relief are needed for mounting a scope forward of the reciever.

May I suggest a receiver peep sight for your old M94?  That satifies many shooters as an alternative to scoping this old classic.
