ENCORE IN 243 WILL NOT SIGHT IN
« on: October 12, 2005, 02:25:06 AM »
Well i went to CABELAS on 10/8 and bought the gun of my dreams a new encore stainless black composite stock &maxima base and rings for my new Leapold vx3 scope(4.5 to 14 x40)and went to sight it in and am lucky to keep it on the paper at 100 yards???????????Used WINCHESTER SUPREME IN 55gr.&95 and no luck with either. Was told by a friend to change base &rings which i did.Changed from an aluminum base to steel (maxima) base So i decided to call thompson arms and was told to send the gun back to them and they will look at the problem and would have a quick turn around?????????RON was the man i spoke to and was told to make a note to his attention when i sent it back. Now my question is what to expect with this gun?Love the way it comes up and holds but never in my life see a gun brand new shoot like this encore? Now i have FEDERAL PREMIUM AMMO to try when the gun comes home ??And how long of a wait do you think?ANY INPUT WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
FRUSTRIATED IN PA.

I sent a 45/410 barrel back several years ago, the shot pattern was way off to one side. They replaced the barrel & I had the new one within a couple of weeks.
Only problem I've ever had in 20 years of T/C products.

Boxxer, I have owned and used Encore rifles and handguns since they first came out and have never owned one that would not shoot more than an inch at 100 yards.  And that was without tuning of any sort - after I spent some time playing with them, many would should about 1/2" or so.  I am sorry to hear of your experience, I would suggest keeping in touch with T/C as they do stand behind their products.  If I can help, drop me a PM and I will try to help.

Did you shoot it without the scope first?  That would give you a indication if it was the barrel or something to do with the scope mounting.

Like Buford, I have never had a bad experience with the accurate with Encore barrels. I have had a lot of them and I still have 4 of them and they shoot great. But I am sure T/C will make it right.

I am confused

Your first 4 shots were with the scope and it shot that well?  Then it was all over?

Or you shot the first 4 without the scope, and put the scope on and it was all over?

It seems to me this has to do with the scope mounts... which could still be improperly placed taps, but you'd think a commercial mount wouldn't allign quite right if that were the case.

It seems obvious, but did your rings losen at all?

What did you do to isolate the barrel as the problem?

From the way you describe the first four shots I would say your scope or scope mounts failed. I would have tried another scope before sending it back. I have had several scopes give up and basically do the same thing. Thats why I like to try a gun with a scope I'm confident with first, and then re-scope it later after I know how well it will shoot.   KN

I know this SUCKS to hear but I would send the scope to Leupold and let them look it over.  You are out of commision anyway and the scope will make it back way before the barrel will!!!!!  I BET ANYWAY!!!!!

Sounds like the scope or base or rings.  BArrel usually do not crap out.  They either pattern or shoot like crap.  If the barrel did crap out, it was most likely a losss of some rifling or something on the crown.

Either way, i would send in the scope for mind sake!

Well.. since the barrel comes all the way off the gun, you can bore sight it by eye.  Put the barrel on something firm and point it to some target about 50 yrds away.  Then adjust the scope so that it's pointed to the same thing.

It should get you on the paper.  When I sighted my Leupold VX2 using Warne mounts to a .308 barrel I was within 4" of the bull when I first shot it.

I have always had best results when free floating the barrel with a neopreme washer.  The synthetic stocks are fairly flexible and can be prone to drifting when they heat up unless free floated.

here is a suggestion as well:

when remounting the scope base, screw one screw in tight, and see if the base moves. Loosen it and go to the next screw, and repeat the process. Lots of screws are too long and may bottom out, meaning you would need to grind off a little at a time to fully cinch them down. Remove all human variables first before going to the next step.

Just my .02 worth.

RWD is correct on checking screws for length. I have had more than one set of screws to long . I also use plenty of blue Loctite. If the screws  or the base holes are not tapered they will move some as most screws don't fit the holes perfect. Loctite will fill in the gaps.

If you can get a good group, but are unable to get the scope adjusted on target at 100 yards i have a fix for you. This is very common for encores. Recenter your scope reticle by counting clicks, the use Burris signature rings, with shim pacs to get as close to center on a bore sighter with the shims before sighting in. I have had to use the full .020 many times. I think it is very hard to align those closely packed mounting holes and the bore. High powered scopes don't have enough internal adjustment.
