Star BM 9mm - rifling
« on: June 14, 2005, 02:40:48 AM »
Please forgive my ignorance, I am more of a shotgun guy than rifle or pistol.

I will be picking up a Star BM soon. I always inspect the rifling on older guns to make sure the barrel is not shot out. The barrel was clean and I did see rifling, but it did not seem deep to me. I have never seen a "shot out" barrel so I am not sure what to look for. Just wondering how deep rifling should be. I know it is hard to comment without seeing it, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Gun is in good shape, I will be doing some re-blueing on it with Oxpho.

Rogmat:  Your Star should have the standard 1:10 twist and the rifling, when new, should be about .002" deep.  This is the approximate standard for jacketed bullets.  Even if you have half the barrelling worn down, the depth should still be about .001 and that is still accurte enough for jacketed bullets.  HTH.  Mikey.
