Author Topic: Ruger Rifle Barrels Quality? (Read 2756 times)

I tried doing a search on this subject but did not find what I was looking for. I want to ask all owners of Ruger M77 MKII purchased after 1996 how the quality of you barrels are. I always hear bad things about their barrels but I love the look of thier rifles I have hesitated on buying one for the longest time. I really like thier prices and man the actions are very nice. I was thinking about getting a laminated .270.

Accuracy boys. How good has accuracy been? If they require some bedding to get there, so be it. I know they need a trigger job. I'll do that too.

I don't think you need to worry about the barrels on any ruger rifles. In my opinion they are just as good as any. With all new rifles you might have to some fine tunning such as sanding a little out of the barrel trench or in other words releiving the barrel some. I just done a little on my mod.77
338win and it shoots like a house on fire. I have a 77mark2 in 223 that will drive tacks all day long and all i have done to it was put a Dayton-
Traister Trigger on it and go P-Dog shooting. Took about 20 min's to put in the trigger. I think you would be happy with a 77 in 270 win............Joe..........

Ruger makes their own barrels now and have for several years. Accuracy was hit and miss in the original M77 days. Ruger subbed out the barrels back then and had enough trouble they gave up and make their own. Accuracy is more consistent. Once you do something that doesn't work out in the firearms business it seems no one ever forgets. I have a MK II stainless and so does my son. Both rifles are plenty accurate.

At present I have rugers in 270/ 7x57/ 30-06/ 223 and over the years have owned several others go ahead and get what you want you will enjoy it.

Maybe my brother, hunting buddy and I have just been lucky. Together we own a number of Ruger M77Â’s, M77MKIIÂ’s and M77 MKII VTÂ’s in a variety of calibers including .22-250, .257 Roberts, 7mm Mag and .300 Win Mag. Accuracy with all these rifles is outstanding. I know there were reports of bad barrels a number of years ago, when Ruger was subbing out the barrel work, but we havenÂ’t seen any.

Rugers also have a rep for lawyered-up trigggers, but the last two I bought and several I have looked at were just fine. I polish them up anyway.

Get a Ruger, float the barrel and see what you have. Polish up the trigger if needed. I think youÂ’ll be very pleased.

17hrm, 6mm, 308, and 270 - All are very accuarate and for the most part are out of the box setups all 77's - my new 270wsm bk/grey lam. withstainless 77 just came in and I expect nutin less from it. I say go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I have a Ruger 77VT in .308 Win. Its one of my most accurate rifles.

A few years back now a wal mart was moving and was droping prices i picked up a mkII in 06 for 250.00 and with factory or my handloads i dont think the biggest group was over 1 1/2 inches but most were around a inch or a little less. Sold it for a 100 over what i payed for it. I would not hesitate to pick up another one

Don't ask me why maybee im perjuidus but for some reason everytime I buy something other than a ruger, i'm not happy with it ,after reading the articles others have wrote I went to the safe to see what I really have to my syrprise it rugars, the only rugar I had any trouble with was a m77 mark 11 in 7mm mag it drove me nuts, I did a dollar test in the barrel channel and found that the barrel was ridding the barrel channel and wasn't right ,cleaned it up now drives tack and was happy as ever even dropped a running doe . my friend claimed he paced it out at 321 yards I belive hes full of the poo. kjg

I own a number of Ruger M77 rifles(both the older tang safety and the newer MK II's) and have never had one with a barrel that had problems. Mostly I put those stories down as rumors started by users of othe brands of rifles and let it go. Get your Ruger and don't worry about it. Lawdog

I've had a lot of experience with Ruger rifles, and the 77s are just as accurate(if not more so) than any of the others.

given my experience with 3 super blackhawks; i am pretty down on ruger.

that being said, i still think the m77 2 is one of the best production rifles out there. i have the exact rifle you are considering. anyone asking more out of a production gun is being unreasonable. the rifle shoots better than i do, and i am pretty good. i have not taken the time to see exactly how good i can get it to perform, but results over the years have been very good.

the one time i tried it at the 200 yard targets i got a one inch group with three shots. i think i can live with that.
