I do not think the CZ is going to wow anyone untill you start shooting it.    I shoot my hunting rifles a lot and I dry fire them every day if I possibly can.----------Once I sight in my rifles I never shoot from a bench again, except to double check the zero.---------Today I took out a Kimber 84, a model 70 and a CZ shooting off hand at 100 yds. The CZ is a good bit heavier than the other two. The extra weight plus the very good balance and the excellent set trigger makes it much easier to shoot accurately off hand. It is really surprising how little the cross hairs move around compared to the other rifles. A lot of rifles are prettier, smoother or what have you, but if I have all my rifles handy and want to hit what I am shooting at I will reach for the CZ.

db,

Think one of the "best/functional" deer rifles around just might be that new Remington M700 SPS in 270 Winchester.  Top it with Leupold's matte finished sope and mounts.  You ought to take a look at one - Just thinking about it make me want to get one.

If I had to choose only one I would keep my LH Sako hunter in .270.  Good stock, good trigger, good action, and topped with a 3.5x10x40 Leupold .  It's one I'll never sell.

Given that your #1 criteria is Reliability I would give the nod to a Model 70. I love the Pre-'64s (duh) but the new classics are fine as well. Your #2 criteria is Accuracy, and while I will not argue the accuracy of the M700 at the range, in the field the most important thing is very simply, how well do you shoot the firearm? So sitting at a bench I am more accurate with a M700, but in the field I will take a M70. It is a personal choice, to be sure... but I also know that I am not alone in saying the old M70s have a tremendous feel to them. They aren't called The Rifleman's Rifle for nothing. As for #3, Sturdiness... given how in-demand the pre-'64 M70s are it is pretty hard to dispute their sturdiness.

I'm pretty new to this board and while I haven't seen any of his specific posts on the issue, I'd say that I am in the same camp as Lawdog. My issues with the M700 are two-fold... 1) The safeties aren't safe. I have seen them fail in the field, and I have forced them to fail under testing. I won't hunt with a rifle that I can't trust, and I frankly don't even want any M700s around me as I trust others less than I trust myself. 2) The push feed is cheap and prone to feeding problems. Too easy to double-jack that sucker and jam it up. Here in the States it isn't as big an issue, unless you're hunting the big bears... but I can tell you very candidly that you do not see many M700s in Africa, especially if the hunter is after dangerous game. At the range the feeding issue is not an problem and you can fire thousands of rounds without a jam... hunting deer, you get a little buck fever and a jam buggers your hunt. You get excited hunting DG and you short stroke that second round... you're dead.

The .30/'06 is a great round. If you're concerned about recoil as you get older you should think about a .308 or a .270.

I am very thankful for all the experiences y'all are sharing.  It really helps in making a decision.  The CZ crowd is all about reliability, and accuracy, even though by their own admission, not so much on aesthetics.  Hey, I can associate, at my age, I'm not aesthetic any more either (fat, old, and bald).  Plus, the CZ's seem to be quite well built.

The M70 crowd seems stuck on the pre '64's.  I, too, have had very good luck with the M70's, albeit post 64's.  Beautiful rifles and good shooters, mostly, (except for the feather-weight).

M700 crowd are very loyal to their chosen rifle.  They've not experienced the difficulties others have, obviously, and I'm sure their rifles are very accurate.

The Savage group is all about accuracy and price.  I agree.

I've had all of the above rifles, except centerfire CZ's, at one time or another (and more).  Two of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned were a post '64 M70 in .308 with a standard barrel and a (post '64) M70 Safari in .375 H&H.   I've not been impressed with Ruger M77's because of a hit or miss (no pun intended) accuracy problem.  If you get one that is accurate, your fortunate, if not, oh, well.  No one can doubt the toughness of Ruger built guns.  I also believe that no one can doubt the reliability of a Ruger.  But my contention is in the consistency of rifle to rifle accuracy.

I know that all of these discussions greatly boil down to individual preferences and taste.  However, I really believe that give my criteria, there are winners.

Thank you for your help.  Please chime in some more. :D

Well, I know that this thread is probably dead, but I thought I owed it to all of you who were so gracious to chime in.  I finally decided on a CZ 550 American in 30-06.  An article I read today sort of capped everything off for me.

So thanks, guys, very much for your input.  You gave me much to think about.  Nothing like personal experience to promote, or demote a product.

Thanks.
