I am looking at a possible transfer to Winnipeg for 2 to 5 years.

One of the things I take into consideration before I move is recreational opportunities.  I like to hunt.

What hunting opportunities are there in the Winnipeg area? Is there public land and or private land access?

Hunting land accessability.  Will I be able to drive out to a hunting area and hunt on foot or will I need a snow machine, horse or ATV to   to get to the hunting areas?

theres a lot of public and a lot of private. i know of good places on public land and i f you did come i can get access on to good private land, as i have family that farms west of the city. manitoba is a pretty good place to hunt. very high deer population, excellent waterfowl, wild turkey, a few wild pigs and moose and caribou farther north. fishing is good too, excellent walleye and catfish right in and around winnipeg, and lots of lakes and rivers that have good fish within 2 hours drive. when you find out if your coming or not let me know and i'll send you a copy of the fishing and hunting regs. funny that you might get moved up here, i got a buddy who was just transfered to north carolina and can hardly wait to buy a full auto AK!

as for an ATV or snowmobile, you don't need them, but they will take you farther off the beaten path. i think you'd be surprised good the hunting can be in areas with very easy access and not a lot of other hunters around. and snowmobile is just plain fun in the winter, great for reaching remote lakes for fishing. you would have to register your guns and some of them you might not even be able to bring. any semi auto long gun can only have a 5 round mag, so if you have a full capacity mag leave it in the states or rivet them to 5 ( not a great option) i wouldn't even bother bringing handguns unless your an avid range shooter as well. you can't hunt with them and you can only transport them if you have the proper papers. even then they can only go the most direct route to an approved range or gunsmith from your home.

hope to see you here!

Kevin,

Thanks for the response,  sounds encouraging.

I have my certificat du chassuer ou du piegauer from Quebec for chasse a l'arme a feu et arbelete and cours canadien de secuitie dans le maniement des armes a feu et examen.

What else would I need to purchase arms and ammunition?

Turkey, huh.  I had never hunted turkey until last year and now I am hooked.   Do you know what kind of turkeys are up there?

How difficult is it to get to the moose and caribou areas?

Sounds like it might be a good area for me to consider.  Better get my paper work done.

it sounds like you passed you Canadian Firearms Safety Course, i don't speak a word of french anymore so i'm not sure what that means. you need a Possesion and Acquistion Licence(PAL) to buy arms and ammo.

heres a link to the Canada Firearms Centre;

http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/default_e.asp

should tell you everything you need to know

i forgot to mention we also have a spring and fall season for black bear. you might also need to take the Manitoba hunters safety course, which is no biggie. the turkeys are Merriam's i think. i was supposed to go this year but money troubles stopped that. i have family out near Treherne and Somerset that farm some prime turkey habitiat. i'm not sure about caribou but you don't have to far back into the bush for moose. you start to find them up around The Pas and all the way north from there. i'd like to hunt them myself, so maybe we could try that out together.we also have an elk season thats open to Manitoba residents only and tags are drawn in a lottery.

i stated before about semi auto mag capacitys being 5 rounds only. i goofed, thats for centerfires only, rimfires have no limits on capacity, the 8 round enbloc of a Garand is also exempt from the limit. handguns are maximum 10 with a few exceptions, like the drum magazine of a Luger.
what guns would you bringing up if you came? your large bore Martini's are exempt from registration, but .22 and .303 models are not.

I think "certificat du chassuer ou du piegauer" "chasse a l'arme a feu et arbelete" is my hunter Safety Certificate for firearms and archery.  Babel fish translates it to mean "certificate of the chassuer or piegauer" and drive out has the weapon has fire and arbelete".

When I was in Quebec I was told that Quebec French is archaic French and does not always translate to modern french.

Most likely I will keep most of my guns in storage in Grand Forks and only bring up what I need when I need it.  I won't bring any handguns or the semi auto stuff. I think the only semi auto I still have is the Garand.

Any gophers or wood chucks to hunt up there?

I think I would bring my Ruger M-77 in 338/308 and a Sporting Martini in 577/450.  If there are gophers or varmints to shoot the Martini in 17HM2 would be nice. Of course Ii would have to bring the wife's. .22 K-hornet Martini.  The Martini GP  would have to come up for turkeys.

I probably wouldn't bring that  much up if I got my PAL.  I should have picked that up when I was Quebec.  Well I have the first part of that done.  I would be hunting the elusive Canadian Martini's while up there!

Does Manitoba require a gun safe or is a gun lock adequate.

All this talking and planning and I haven't even go the the job yet.

I sent an email to the Canada Firearms Centre and asked the if my Quebec certificate would work to get my PAL.   I included my Certificate number.   I know in Canada that number is your social insurance number.  In my case since I worked for the U.S. Government they had issue me a special number. That ought to baffle them a bit.

sorry, shotgun only for birdys. you'd need a gunsafe, but Canadian Tire sells cheap ones for $150 that meet the legal requirments. i your gonna buy guns up here, buy CAS guns. original '92 Winchesters sell for a fraction of the cost they do down south. there is a cross prairie tournament every summer to see how can bag the most gophers. i think first prize is a new varmint rig. you better get that job, or else i'll have gotten all excited and started planning hunts for nothing! :-D

When I was in Montana I would go to Walmart in February and buy a case of bulk loaded .22 lr's for gophers-a case 5500 rounds. Between the wife and  I, we would run out about  mid May.  That was just part time hunting.

The Martini GP is a 12 guage shotgun.

Minds right now I have to get the darn job!

can the GP fire steel? you'd have to have a gun capable of handling steel for waterfowl. mmm... roast goose....

hey!!! hope your transfer goes through. I'd be happy to help with the hunting as well. I mainly hunt in the western part of the province, carberry and west of brandon. lots of elk out that way too, as for the draw, after you become a manitoba citizen, you do qualify for the draw system. I'd certainly  be happy to have another hunting partner!! Both Kevin and I shoot out at selkirk range just north of winnipeg, and there's a good handgun range right in winnipeg. keep us posted!!
you wanna take my guns? go ahead, it's your arm!

as for caribou, it's about an 8 hr drive north, then a float plane out from there. moose are a little closer, or you can fly out if you wish.

Thanks, Gents, it sure sounds like the hunting aspect of going north is covered.   If Ii were to get selected for the position I don't think I would be up there soon enough to be a resident.  Besides my Missouri hunt for this fall is already paid for.

But I definitely would be ready for spring.
