savage 93 accuracy
« on: February 17, 2005, 05:15:59 AM »
i have been trying to fine tune my savage 93 22wmr. i have done the trigger shim job and i am satisfied with that. the problem i am having is on paper. i just cannot achieve the groups that i am expecting. i have tried several different brands of ammo, but still cannot achieve my goals. i weigh all of my ammo and sort it accordingly. can anyone share their accuracy results with this gun. thanks.....

Try some other ammo, sooner or later you're gonna find something that shoots good in it. You might look over at www.rimfirecentral.com for any recommended tips, too. One that I do that speeds up barrel break in is the Varmint Al break in process san the moly bullets.

this gun is not brand new. it has several hundred rounds through it. i wasn't asking for beginners advice. i was asking for results from people with the same gun. also, i have tried many different types of ammo. at $10 a box this is getting old. i think this gun should at least shoot .75 @ 50 yards. if it won't then i'll sell it. guess my post wasn't very clear....

That seems kinda weird that a Savage wont shoot well. I havent owned one yet that wasnt a great shooter. I have a 93 in 17hmr, I did the trigger work and now it will shoot almost into one hole at 50 yrds, but it is fairly new.
Since your rifle has had quite a few rounds through it maybe you should try and clean the barrel really good with some kind of lead/copper remover. I have never tried it but i think its called "WIPE OUT" Their might be other brands out there that will work too.

thanks flinch, but  i have already tried that. scrubbed with copper solvent and swabbed the bore clean.i even forgot to mention that it has a stainless bull barrel.   i am checking the crown next. gotta be a reason why this gun shoots like crap. i don't have room in the safe for a 1 inch @50 yard rifle....

I have an 93R17-BVSS that will shoot 0.75 or less @ 100 yards. I am very pleased with this rifle.
Additions are Rifle Basix sear and 6-24x40mm scope.

This is apples to oranges.  My 93 is 17 HMR.  I had good luck with it until I tried the hollowpoint 20 grain bullets, then the group turned into a pattern.  I assumed that it was the gun didn't like the bigger bullet, but it turned out to be a magazine problem.  The hollowpoint would catch on the way into the chamber and nick it up.  I changed clips and the problem went away.

In my 22 mags I have had the best groups with Remington Premier Vmax loads.

Good luck.  You are right that 93 should be better than that.
