Rem. 1100 and low brass shells
« on: January 19, 2005, 03:43:53 AM »
I have an old Rem. 1100 LW 20ga. magnum that I would like to shoot skeet loads in for practice and crow hunting. I have cleaned the gun very well and it still does not want to cycle using low brass shells. I have tried Win. Fed. and Rem. shells. None of them will work in this gun. High brass and 3" magnum work flawlessly in it. Is there any thing that I may do that will allow me to use low brass shells in this gun and still use magnum loads in it also?
Thank You

The short answer is no.  The reason it won't function reliably is that the gas port in the barrel is set for the high pressure loads, not the lower pressure target loads.  I believe your magnum LT20 barrel has just one gas port,  .0640" in size.  The 2 3/4" chambered barrels have two ports, .0670" in size.  This allows more gas to operate the action.  Some have drilled out their magnum port, but this limits the barrel to low pressure loads.  You have to get a 2 3/4" chambered spare barrel to shoot low pressure loads, and still have your magnum barrel for hunting.

Thanks Bob,
I compared my barrel to a 2 3/4" barrel and it is as you say. One port in the magnum and two in the 2 3/4" barrel.
