Shoot 410 shot shells out of a 45-70 ???

Shoot 410 shot shells out of a 45-70 ??? heard this today....that the old time soldiers used 410 shot shells to hunt with in the field during war time.
Is this possible ????????

I don't know about the 45-70 but when I was in Alaska I did a lot of hunting with a 444 Marlin and I used to carry a few 410 shells to pot a Spruce grouse or a Ptarmagin!
Had to feed them single shot!  They worked pretty good, I never tried them over about 30 feet!
Don't bother saving the empties for reloading, they swell too much!
They worked for me!

Joe,

A buddy of mine has a bolt gun built off of a Siamese Mauser in 45-70. He's pretty bad about popping irritating tree rats while deer hunting. He's never said anything about it harming his rifle,but it's a lot stronger action than a T/C. The rifling may cause a bit of scattering effect so keep it with in close range.
