Building muscle strength for shooting off-hand!
« on: January 16, 2005, 04:45:03 PM »
An exercise for BPCR shooters to build muscle strength in
the arms and shoulders. It is very easy and you only need to do it 3
days a week.

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty of
room at each side.

With a 5 pound potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out
from your sides and hold them there as long as you can.

Try to reach a full minute, then relax.

Each day, you will find that you can hold this position for just a bit
longer.

After a couple of weeks, move up to a 10 pound sack and then a 50
pound sack.

Eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100 pound potato sack in
each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the
sacks!

      :D Good one, Jon!! Reminds me of when I used to shoot competition black powder with a 12lb .50cal JP Henry flintlock. I did what I called henry-ups, basically arm curls with the rifle in my left hand as I'm right handed. Worked well and improved my offhand shooting as all shooting was done in an unsupported position.

I'm the good looking fellow on the left behind the JP Henry flintlock! You're lookin at the winning team at the Whiskey Flats Fort Shoot, '94 Pacific Nationals NMLRA Shoot!!

I saw that one coming Jon...pretty good! That is very hard to do...now that I have my FrankenClassic up to about 11 plus pounds it's not easy to hold that steady for very long....the recoil is much less but I can't hit squat!!  :? Gotta have that prop or stick.... :(   [P.S. that is the roughest bunch of highwaymen I've ever seen Quick.... :-D  Looks like fun!!]

We had a heck of a great time at that rondevouz!!  Jake(fella next to me and my hunting & fishing partner for over 30yrs) and I went to a candle shoot to watch Minkman(next man over), he ended up out on the first round and we asked to shoot his rifle since it was already dirty. It's a .62cal caplock....after several rounds and moving back to 40+yds or so, Jake and I ended up in 2nd and 3rd place out of a total of 30 some shooters! With a borrowed rifle at a shoot we only intended on watching!!! A candle shoot is done after dark at a candle flame. Shooting starts at approx 10yds and after each round, those that hit the flame extinguishing it without hitting the candle itself get to move back 5yds and everyone  still standing shoots again. It's really a hoot with a flintlock, that flash in your eyes is lots O' fun. We credit doing well to lots of practice at out regular club shoots and an excellent mentor who had been doing rondys since 1978!

Thanks, it was just one of the highlights of the week there...Winning the fort shoot, placing in the candle shoot,  both Jake and I took a daily fist place on the Hawk and knife trail and he won the event for the week overall, too.
