Sako Problem...
« on: January 16, 2005, 12:40:46 PM »
I stopped by my local Mom/Pop sporting goods store and he had a sign posted that said that he would NOT be carrying any more Sako/Tikka firearms.  When I asked him why he said that he has been notified that the parent company, Beretta, is requiring a minimum buy of $15,000.00 per order(he showed me the letter).  This he can't afford nor can many other small dealers.  This should really help boost the sales at Beretta.  Lawdog

My local Sako dealer has been saying the same thing.  He did not go into specifics as far as amounts go but said they were getting hard to deal with.  I just don't get it.  Why would any company do this?  I am glad I have the Sako rifles I do since I cannot beat his prices anywhere with in 100 miles.  I love their rifles but am not all that enthused lately with their business practices.

I have been dealing with the Italians in Italy for the purchase of high end granite manufacutering equipment for one of my clients, and they have proved to be difficult negotiators.  Not difficult in terms of price, but difficult in terms of trying to understand their business practice.  Perhaps I shouldn't generalize, but it does appear that the same holds true for Beretta (another Italian company).

I wonder if Beretta has this same $15,000 order policy in place with European dealers.

It's pretty expensive to deal with the small shops. Lots of catologs and promo items, few sales. Maybe they would rather have the guns sold by the big outfits like Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabela's, Dick's. ect. Beretta has been around longer than any other gunmaker, since the 1500's, so I would not second guess them on marketing.
BTW, Harley-Davidson Motorcycles did somewhat the same thing to their smaller dealers about 25 years ago, I don't think they suffered too bad from it.

Same here in North Central Texas too   Most Mon & Pop stores caan't afford the $15,000 initial lay out. A couple of years ago it was 10 Grand. they went up another 5 Thousand recently.
NOTE: Berettas just had a 5% or $200.00 price increase too.
We bought and praised the Tikka's now they are harder to get what you are looking for. Coming 3 years ago I paid $459.00 for my blu/syn  W/T Hunter.

I know that the Bass Pro here in South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale) sells Sakos but not Tikkas, but I think that's because it's a probably a business decision on the part of Bass Pro, not because Sako won't allow anyone to sell Tikkas.  Just doesn't make any sense - although owned by the same parent company (Beretta) Sako and Tikka really are not in competition with each other because the Sakos are about 2x the cost, and thus in a different market.  Tikka, on the other hand, competes head to head with the likes of Remington, Winchester, and Ruger.

My gun store here is saying the same thing, that there required to purchase more inventory in order to sell Sako's, other than an occasional over priced special order. So their blowing out there last display gun, model 75s/s in 30.06, that has been on the shelf for about 4 years for $870. I don't really need the gun, but I put it on law-away to think about it. I also heard that the new price has gone up from $1200 to $1400, any opinions on my unneeded but wanted potential new purchase, and where this Beretta/Sako thing is headed?

I'm confused.   I thought when you are a Gun Dealer you had to buy through a Distributor.   It shouldn't be much of a problem for big distributors to handle a $15,000 order from Sako/Tikka considering their high end prices.  If you mean a local shop must buy a $15,000 inventory from a distributor, then Beretta is making a huge mistake.  Nobody keeps that kind of inventory on hand, mainly because of IRS rules.
