New Bull Barrel .308 Ultra
« on: January 14, 2005, 05:06:43 AM »
This morning, I picked up the new .308 Survivor that I ordered. As soon as I got it home, I cleaned the barrel, then shot a round off. I used that fired case to make a a polishing tool for the chamber. I used J.B. bore paste, and polished the chamber and the bore. It did have a lot of metal shavings in the ejector. I also swapped out the Survivor stock for a newly refinished Ultra laminated stock, putting an o-ring on the barrel lug. The forearm fits real tight, I believe because of the size of the bull barrel. I can however run a dollar bill between the barrel and the forearm up to that barrel lug. My rings are already mounted, and waiting to mount a scope. I have a 2.5-8x40 Leupold to go on it. I checked the trigger pull on a RCBS scale, and it tripped at exactly 3 pounds, that's encouraging. I sure hope this rifle is a shooter!

Thanks Mac,
Today ended up being a two fer. While I was picking up that Survivor, I spotted several new boxes that I hadn't seen there before. They were Ruger M77 Mark II Compacts in .308. I've fondled one before, and really liked it, so I dropped a deposit on this one. Now I'll have to separate .308 loads so I don't confuse which rifle they are for. By the way, this local dealer came in $34 less than Wally Worlds price on these Rugers.

I've been pondering the same idea, buy a survivor for the 20" Bull and restock it with something better than that ugly survivor stock. Let us know how it shoots. Congrats on the purchases!!
Thx,

Mac11700,
That is exacly what I'm looking for, except maybe a thumbhole stock!! I wanted to do it in a .270, but they only offer a 22" barrel, so I might as well switch to a .308, I wouldn't be giving anything up and I just might like it!! What scope do you have on there? I was thinking of 50mm objective, kinda looks like that might be what is on yours, just can't tell from the pix. Sweet gun!!!
Thx,

If you look at the link above...you'll see that you can get the 270 in a 23" barrel...or the 30-06 in a 23" barrel...If I'm not mistaken...these barrels are the same as what came on the Ultra-Comps like I have ...but without the muzzel brake...and they are a larger contour barrel...over the standard barrel...a call to NEF Tuesday will confirm that...( I'll be calling them...and let you know for sure  )...if they are...you can always get your 270 barrel...granted...it's not a 26"...but...still it's a bit longer &  heavier and thicker than the standard barrel....

As to the scope on my 308...nope...it's a Simmons Whitetail Expidition 4 x 12x 42 mm...not a 50mm...it was ok...but...I wasn't as pleased with it as some of the other scopes I've owned...

The thumbhole stocks...from Gunstocks.Inc...look pretty good...

http://www.gunstocksinc.com/web%20pages/Plate%20Pic's/NEF%20stocks/nef%20Stinger%20descrip.htm

You need to give them a call and discuss exactly what you want done...you might want to take a-look at my 270 Handi...it's sitting in a set of their stocks...not the thumb hole...but very niceones...

Thx Mac11700, I have thought about the Ultra hunter in .270, but i really want a 20" bull barrel (short and fat, like my women?!?!) I would either have to go with the .308 or have a 23" .270 cut and recrowned, which doesn't seem economical.

I like the gunstocksinc thumbhole stock, but I heard a nasty rumor that Boyd's was going to make a version of their 10/22 Smart Stock (ambi, thumbhole) for the Handi rifle. I sent them an e-mail, but no reply so far.

You've got a couple of nice looking Handi's there, I'm just looking into the Handi market, I bought my son the .243 and have been messing around with it, the more I play with it, the more I want one (or more) for myself. Just a short list right now, .270 or .308, a .223 and maybe a .17HMR or .22Mag, I'm sure the list could get longer!!!

Thx again,
R

I can't blame you there...I've thought about spending the extra bucks and having a 25-06 Ultra rebored to 270 on a few occasions...for the extra velocity from it...couple the 26" tube with some Hornady Lite Magnums...and you'll be at Weatherby velocities and WSM velocities with a-lot less pressure too...

I met a guy at the range with the new .308 with the survivor stock.  Gun looked quite sharp, esp with the bipod on front.

I am not sure what he was shooting for ammo, but his groups were 1.5 to 2" at 100yds.  Then again, he probably was not doing his part.

I LOVE the .308!!!  i am sure your gun will be a tack driver...  and look good doing it too! :o
