if anyone is looking for a nice company to work with for gun stocks and other equipment to put on your rifles and encores and contenders then you need to take a look at  these people for sure. i found their prices great and they are for unfinished so you can finish them in whatever finish you want them to look like.
i ordered that stock on tuesday and friday evening i got my new thumbhole stock and they were so helpful seeing as i am making my debut in finishing out my first gun stock and they sent me written instructions on the way they finish their stocks and forends.
if you find yourself looking for a new stock either in a tc arms encore or contender or even a regular stock for any of the companies that build rifles just give them a shout at www.gunstocksinc.com and give them your business. the have some great laminate stocks as well and great prices

i thought about a laminated but decided to keep it like the standard in walnut which is turning out much better than i thought it would. i may still try and do a laminated later when i get a new reciever as i have extra stock now and then use that one for my 209x50 and then when i do a laminated later i will move it to my main gun and use the walnut for my ml. great looking gun by the way i like the looks of the set up. very tight how the grain comes out. did the prefit sims recoil pad work for the stock as i have one ordered to go on the new thumbhole stock

rob,
I don't know if a pre fit pad will work as these are custom stocks, When I order the stocks I order them with the Limbsaver pads fit to my stock, Gunstocks Inc. will supply the pad, install it and fit it to the stock for less than alot of places charge for just a pad.
Different LOP's will change the size of the butt on the stock so I would guess the pre fit pads would not fit perfect, that is why I order the limbsaver installed and fit to the stock at my desired LOP.

Gentlemen,

I went to gunstocksinc and have decided I want to replace my Encore's composite stock with a laminated thumbhole stock.  The only problem is, I have no idea how to finish a stock.

Will a simple water-based stain and linseed oil work?  How about a polyurethane coating?

I guess I should get a thumbhole walnut stock for my contender first to "practice on".  That way, if I screw it up, I won't be out more than $50.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

If you ask them they will e-mail you instructions for finishing a stock , they recommend an tung oil finish and I agree with that, a poly finish just sits on top of the wood where as a tungoil finish is in the wood.

Moe,
Go to gunstocks Inc. recoil pad page here,
http://www.gunstocksinc.com/web%20pages/discription_copy(1).htm
This will show you how to measure the LOP, it is from the trigger to the end of the stock with pad installed.

Here is a very good website with steps for finishing a gun stock.  It even includes a picture of a custom Contender stock!  http://riflestocks.tripod.com/
