breech plug difference
« on: December 06, 2004, 03:28:09 AM »
i did a search on this and came up empty. i noticed a big difference in the breech plug on my 209x50 Encore and my friends 209x50. mine has a concave area where it contacts the powder, his is flat. i was looking at replacements at the store, and they are the same style as mine. my gun was purchased in early 2001, his was purchased in 2002. can anyone shine some light on this for me? thanks....

smokey,
I believe Encore has redesigned their breechplug three times and you may have an intermediate design.  If you were to contact them through customer service, I'm sure they can help to get you the latest???? design.
I would also check the Precision Rifle Site to see if Cecil has any information on these breechplugs. <www.prbullet.com>

I understand that the flat ones are for pellets and the concave one for loose powder. I also uinderstand that T/C ships both styles with newer guns.

pa joe,
I don't know that that's what the design changes were made for......I believe they are trying to do away with the crud-ring buildup issue.......and the pellets were certainly one of the worst offenders!

ok, that makes sense. but i will tell you this, my friends gun has the flat breechplug and he shoots loose powder. it doesn't seem to affet the accuracy at all. i would like to know the science involved. thanks guys....

I have a side hammer 50cal. Traditions w/ Breech plug that's flat also.  I will admit to you that I've had the ramrod jam on a couple occasions when using a spit-patch to clean between shots of loose triple 7 powder.  I have seen only a slight amount of buildup on the face of the flat breechplug, or crud-ring powder residue.  I don't use borebutter, ever!  As said, I spit-patch between shots at the range and clean at home with hot water and dish detergent with Ballistol swab after.  I also like Windex as a range cleaner.
