Encore for Son
« on: December 03, 2004, 04:30:34 PM »
I am building an Encore for my son.  I am wanting to have it stainless and in 243.  What is the lightest barrel I can get?  (Fluted if need be) and are the laminate stocks that much heavier.

Thanks

Harp

THe laminated stocks are much heavier than the walnut and synthetic stocks.  The synthetic stocks are the lightest.  The standard 24" stainless 243 barrel with a synthetic stocks should be light enough for you son.

nothing wrong with a fluted barrel and it does help take a little weight off ofit but the 243 is usually a pretty light weapon when on a synthetic stock. it will definately change the weight of the gun if you go that way. i have the walnut but am seriously thinking of adding a ross thumbnhole stock in either pepper or nutmeg and go that way and use the 10030 sims recoil pad and am sure i will enjoy the gun even more. that may help your son also using a thumbhole sock and the boyds are ready for your taste in you will be finishing the stock yourself
good luck

I got a factory style walnut stock from Gunstocks Inc. for my son, I had them put on a Sims limbsaver pad at a 12" LOP for him.
I also purchased one of there new Stiger Thumbhole stock sets with a limbsaver pad for my Encore, they also have the sporter thumbhole stocks, here is a pic of my Encore Stinger stock.

Remember that lighter will sometimes mean more recoil.

That said, I would opt for the factory synthetic and do the following.

1. Remove the factory butt pad and fill the hollow stock with carpet padding or spray in expanding foam.  This will deaden the hollow sound and feel of the stock.

2.  Install a prefit sims recoil pad.  They make one for that model stock and it fits nicely with no gunsmiting and it works!

In regards to your barrel choice, I know that when Virgin Valley was in business they offered a carbon wrapped barrel that was a barrel that had been turned to a very small diameter and then wrapped with carbon for strength and light weight properties.  The down side was the price, about $900.  I don't know if a barrel of this type is available from another vendor for less.
