209x50 Accuracy
« on: November 13, 2004, 04:19:53 AM »
I have owned a 50 cal Encore for 4 years. in that time I have read may many posts about which bullet to use. I have tried many bullet/powder combos and have learned that mine prefers the heavier bullets. I have two friends that have Encores and have had similar results. My current hunting load is 110gr of 777 topped with a 300gr T-C xtp. My question is this: Can anyone HONESTLY say that they have shot tight groups with any of the lighter bullets? (180-200gr) I would like to hear about it...

You need to visit the Modern inline muzzleloader section here at Graybeards. You will see a lot post on accuracy results in Encore M/L's.
I am shooting 1 to 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with 195 gr. Precision Rifle DC saboted bullets.

At 50yrds my 209x50 shooting 240gr Hornady SST with two 50gr pellets holds 1/2in to 3/4in groups-at 100yrds it stays below 1.5in groups.
I am quite pleased-I have never tried the heavy stuff but may experiment after the season.

actually, i did some experimenting today. tried the 300gr shockwaves. man are they tough to get down the bore, even when clean. they did however shoot nice. 110gr triple 7  they stay within 1.5 inches.. not bad, let's see what they do to Mr. Big on monday....

Try PowerBelt Bullets

Hey,

I struggled somewhat trying to find an elk load.  Then I tried the 385 grain Power Belt bullets, with 140 grains of Pyrodex RS Select.  Easily grouped under 2" at 100 yards with iron sights.

At 100 yards shooting two 777 pellets behind a 220 grain Powerbelt, I can get 1" groups off the rest up to about 5 shots without cleaning.

Have yet to shoot a deer with this load but believe it will work fine.

At 100 yards I have shot a three shot group with the second shot in the same hole as the first and the third shot cutting the first two shots. I shoot mag express black sabot's and Hornady 240 grain 44 cal. XTP's over 100 grains of Pyrodex Pellets.

when i first got my Encore i played around with those 240gr xtp's. i always pushed them way too fast. (3 pellets) they would group okay out to 50-60 yards, but after that, they would get eratic. btw, i shot a medium size buck with one of those. it exploded after impact. i recovered small pieces of bullet and a big piece of the copper jacket from inside the chest cavity. i don't think these bullets were ever meant to travel at that speed....

My dad shoots 250gr. shockwave and 100gr. Triple 7 and he will shoot 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 100 yrds. Usually it will cut holes shooting off of a bench rest. Can't wait to get my muzzle loader barrel.I just have the 7mag right now.

i have shot mine one shot at a itme and cleaning between each shot and am shooting very tight groups and can put a quarter in between a three shot group at a hundered yards and am very happy with it. my groups never went over the size of a 50 cent piece and am shooting 100 grains 777 two pellets and a powerbelt 245 grain bullet. i found my barrel really likes the bore clean when it shoots but am able to make a 2nd shot if needed in the field so i am very confident in the gun and it is a sweet shooter

I too have had a little trouble shooting tight groups with my 209x50 SS. I have tried many different combinations. I know that other people have had much better results.

Also have had a 209x50 for about 4 years. My business partner got one at the same time and they shoot about the same. Initially we tried Nosler 250 gr Partion Gold bullets with their sabots and 150 grs of Pyrodex pellets. Not accurate. Switched to Barnes 300 gr MZ's and 3 pellets. Very tough to load but accurate. Then tried Hornady's .452 250 gr HP with Knight mag sabots and 3 pellets. Accurate. Now let me define accurate. Two bullet holes touched, with the third about 1 1/2 to 2" away at 100 yards. The first two rounds were alway tight. Gave Ken French, at T/C, a call. He said this is common with the Encore as they have a very tight bore. He recommended to clean between rounds for accuracy testing. One wet patch followed by a dry patch, then a lightly bore buttered patch. Wow, what a difference. We both could shoot honest 1 1/4" 3-shot groups a 100 yards. Since that time I have tried Speer .458 400 gr FP with 3 pellets, 1 1/4" groups. Last year I switched to Hornady's 250 gr SST's with 3 pellets. They will consistently shoot 1" At 100 yds, 2 1/4" at 200 yds, and 4 1/2" at 300 yds. Triple-Seven, at 150 grs, will also shoot 1" 100 yd groups. Haven't tried it beyond though. I have switch three other friends over to this cleaning routine and it has shown similar results. According to French, a dirty bore will score and distort the soft plastic sabot upon loading affecting accuracy. Since I always start my hunt with a clean bore it makes sense.
