look what i found!!

general deer season opens on monday so i was getting in one last round of target practice this afternoon. i was out in the gravel pits where i usually go, and since there was still sun in the the sky i figured i go for a walk down one of the trails in the area, see if i couldn't find a wild hog.( this is the same place where i found a burning blanket in the middle of nowhere a few weeks back)i was wandering for about 20 minutes when i can here a crashing in the bush of to my left. " ah ha "says I, " free range bacon!" and off i go, crashing thruogh the timber in hot pursuit. at this time i noticed a funny smell in the air but couldn't identify it. well, i didn't find a hog, but i did find a genuine moonshine still. the fire had been recently doused and i guess the crashing i heard was the owner taking off. musta thought i was a reven'ooer. i looked it over and then headed back the way i came. in case whoever owned it decided to come back,i didn't want to be around. i didn't tell anyone and i not sure if i will. don't get me wrong i know it's illegal, and if it was a grow op or some other drug thingy i would have called the mounties right away, but i got a special place in my heart for moonshiners. at one time both my grandfathers had a still tucked away on the farm. i only tell you that because they're both dead and the only phyiscal evidence is a gallon jug of, umm, water. what would you do if you where in my shoes?

Another come upon that's possible is stumbling into someone's pot farm, been there, I left and notified the sheriff. They collected a bunch of plants but never caught the "farmers" that I know of.

ua bill thats my thinking. the only reason it's illegal is because the feds can't tax it. that it's not really harming anyone. narcotics would be a different kettle of fish.

Guys,
A criminal is a criminal. And God does ordain the law of the land. I cant pat myself on the back for having Christian core values for how I voted and then say I would just turn my head,or support illegal operations like drugs or illegal liquor. Besides there is no way of knowing just what those people put in that stuff. Many people have been blinded or killed by moonshine liquor. Its just to dangerous to take a chance on when, if you want a drink, you can get one so easily and legally. Im not a "goody two shoes" but I have a history regarding this stuff and I just plain dont like it or the kind of people who make and distribute it. I would report it so fast it would make your head spin.

To dangerous to drink?  When I'm looking at the still?  Oh, I get it, you aren't used to seeing a still........

Stills aren't very common around here any more, and it is much more likely to come up on a meth operation, or a pot field.  The meth really scares me!

I understand your feeling about christ, and obeying the law of the land, but moon shining is about tax revenue!  Render unto Ceaser.......I know....I know

Had me a few sips this weekend of the best shine I think I've ever tasted....some guy out of NC brought it with him........Us Tennesse boys might have to change the recipe!

Actually, I grew up in the south and stills were quite common. It was an everyday event to come up on a still  as a boy when I was small game hunting. Some of my family actually had stills. Moonshining was and still is common down here.  I certainly dont mean to judge anyone who chooses to tip the jug once in a while. Used to do that myself. But once when I was about 16 yrs old there was a rash of people getting sick and yes even dying from moonshine around my home town. Shinners would use old car radiators and lead solder in constructing the condenser and snake and people were getting lead poison. The law was not able to find the source. No one knew anything, or no one was talking. But my best friends dad had better, or worse, luck. One morning he was on his own property looking for a cow and calf that had not come up that morning, when he happened up on the still. He had no idea it was there. He never saw the man or the 30-30 that put him in a wheel chair for the rest of his life and eventually killed him. His family lost everything they had and had to leave and go back to Fla where they were from. I never saw my friend again. No sir I dont like moonshine or moonshiners. They are scum and I will report any and every still or shinner I find out about. There are probably some very good and clean stills out there, but if I wanted a drink, I wouldn't take a chance. I would go to the package store and buy me some good liquor.

Stills or illegal drug operations, etiher one, give them a wide berth. As the above post shows some of these operators will shoot you but more commonly at least with drugs, these operations are booby-trapped.

I had a friend who majored in forestry who is now a pharmasist because his first job in forestry was tracking birds in northern california. He was routinely shot at and had to keep looking at his feet to insure that he didn't accidentally wander into somebodie's grow operation.

like i said in the end i did report it. i thought on it for a while and figured this guy was making it for a profit, not his own use. i have heard of people going blind from it, and if i don't know who made it or what they made i with, i won't drink it. my grandfather was always very careful about making sure it was safe and he never sold it. that would be trafficking. it was only for private consumption. he figured he could make a better product then what was availble in the store. guess the "dukes of hazzard" haas knida glamourized the whole practice.

speaking of drugs, had anyone seen or heard of crystal meth labs being set up in ice fishing shacks? i first heard about this happening in Minnisota a few years back, and i think a bust was made up here last winter.

You know guys, thinking about this and dredging up old memories has really got me pi$$ed off. To think that me, my son, or my grand children have to worry about this kind of garbage every time we go out in the woods and fields to enjoy a little shooting or fishing because of the type of low lifes that engage in this type of illegal activity. If some one should hurt one of mine, the very best they could hope for is to be arrested. Cause if I get them first, God forgive me for what I would do. I have no personal experience with the drug growers, and I believe they are worse than the moonshiners now, but I understand they even do this on public lands. Man, nowhere is safe anymore, and nothing seems to be sacred any longer. We really need to kick them all out of our woods so we can enjoy our selves in peace and safe from being maimed or murdered.  :(

There sure is a difference between homemade and bought booze isn't there. Live and let live heck we can even get along with the rest of the world let alone each other.  Now the european states are united without us?  After we supported them in the big one ww2?  I don't know if its good or bad but the one goverment world is comming quicker than we think.  I think we have much more to worry about besides a Still and home brew corn liquor or sour mash what ever you call it.                 BigBill

You are absolutely correct. This old world has really become a mess and we have manny things to be concerned about, but a moonshine still and what we would do if we found one is what this thread is about.  :D
