new barrel advice
« on: October 27, 2004, 04:24:03 AM »
I plan on getting a new barrel for my encore in the spring. I am thinking about one around 20" long. The barrel would mainly be used for deer hunting where shots under 100 yards in wooded areas are the norm and 200 yard shots very rare. Hopefully this will be the barrel that my son will take his first deer with a few years down the road and a mild recoiling caliber is desired for this reason. Not being a big fan of hunting deer with small calibers or muzzle brakes on short barrels, I am considering the following calibers. [7mm TCU, 7mm BR,30 Herrett ] I am leaning towards a 7mm since I already reload 7mm Mag and have several types of bullets to use in that caliber. Any info or advice about these calibers or others that will fit my need would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jack

You might want to consider a .357 max. With a 15 in. barrel I can shot point blank to about 150 yrds. from a carbine lenth barrel you should get close to the 200 yrds. A real good short range deer round.

What about the 7-30 Waters? It would sure be easier to reload.

Somerled,
What would the recoil of 7-30 be like in a 20" rifle version of the encore?

7mm 08 less recoil then your 7mag but still good to 300 yards.

Cannot go wrong with the 7-30 Waters!!!

I would suggest it or 30-30, 257 Roberts, 35 Remington, 308, 7mm-08 etc....Personally I like the 7-30 Waters and 257 Roberts for that billing.

7mm-08.  You can download this using single shot pistol bullets when he first starts hunting and gradually build up to full power stuff as he grows.  The 7MM TCU, albeit a great round, is far more limited in umph!

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning towards the 7-30 Waters since I already own a 26" 270 win. barrel for when my son can handle something with a little more weight and recoil. What length barrel would be best for the 7-30 waters as a rifle , 16.25", 18", or 20"?

I have a 7mm mag SS and it shoots very nice. less than a quarter at 100yds. It likes nosler 140 gr BTs and shoots good with very slow burning powders.
