Fixed choke or choke tubes????
« on: September 29, 2004, 01:53:17 PM »
I'm going to pick up a new-to-me barrel for an old closet queen Wingmaster who's sole purpose will be a backup trap gun.  The gun I use weekly is an 1100 with choke tubes, and after using them all, I put the "Full" in and have left it there, I don't even take the others with me anymore.
I understand that all guns are different, but there is normally a trend among like features.
The difference in price is not sufficient to be a deciding factor, and there isn't much difference in availability.
This is kinda the long way around to get to the meat; so, Does one shoot any better than the other, if so, which?

I personally like a solid choke barrel over a choke tube barrel.  I have always felt the choke tube barrels are muzzle heavy but it wouldn't matter on a gun to be used for trap only.  Some people say that a solid choke barrel will pattern better also but the only way to find out is to have a solid choke barrel tubed after patterning and pattern again with same loads.
Good Shooting,
George

I personally like choke tubes as I can then custom select the choke I want for the various chores to which I might put it. And I do put mine to many different chores.

BUT if you've decided full choke is appropriate for the use to which you'll put the barrel then there is no real advantage or disadvantage to either type. Both work just fine.

Fixed choke or choke tubes????

I lost $5 on this topic once.  Worked with a guy that swore that straight choked barrels shot better groups than tubes.  I told him he was crazy.  I shot my 870 with a midified barrel and got a pattern that almost measued full.  Shot my other 870 with a modified tube and got a pattern that was barely modified with lots of holes in it.  I paid the man his $5.

Now there are lots of variables.  The difference could have been in the modified tube or the barrel itself.  The 870 with the tubes was an express which does not have the quality of the wingmaster which is what the choked barrel was (the Express also shot about 4" to the right).

Other than that old wingmaster all my guns today have tubes (the express is gone).  I have done some pattern test and they appear to be okay.  A part of me still likes the fixed chokes, but them tubes are a lot easier to carry and store than those extra barrels.  I would use either and not worry about it as long as it patterns good.  As this story shows, a gun can pattern good or bad, there are many variables.

I've always been of the opinion that a fixed choke barrel should shoot better than it's equivalent tubed barrel but thought I should ask the Pros.  I thank you all for your input.
I guess I'm going to go with the fixed if for nothing more than the psychological value.
