slight barrel movement
« on: September 05, 2004, 02:52:12 PM »
Is it normal for a slight degree of barrel movement on an encore rifle when its locked-up? I detect a bit of movement after I lock the breach and grasp the butt stock with one hand and the end of the barrel with the other hand and give it a mediocre push side to side. Though its hard to visually observe it, I can feel a tiny amount of play. I hope this is typical, cuz I just bought my frame and barrel this past week, NEW, and I havent fired it yet. Please say it isnt so.......Cuz if this is a defect then I will probably dump my $480 purchase and never consider a Thompson Center product again. Especially after reading all the problems people have with their Encores and Thompsons lack of quality control I have read on this forum.

Look and the Design !! How could this be made with zero play all the time ? I wouldn't expect it . There are people that make oversize hinge pins to cut down on the play but I have only heard of one person that said that it actually improved the accuracy but it makes it harder to change barrels.
You speak as though you have some firearm knowledge or did you buy this and then show it some one who explained what a POS you got ? Did you research your firearm purchase ?
This is not a custom bolt rifle made for bench rest  shooting but a hunting rifle made to switch calibers easily, Theres  going to be a trade off

Ive not had this problem with any of my barrells.  But bellm makes an oversized hingepin if its in that area hat is loose but it to think it might just be tightening the screw for the stock. hope that you get the problem solved

I don't know whatever came of your situation but it could be that the firing pin bushing is a little under sized and your barrel is not locking up as tight as it should be.  I think they allow a tolerance of 4 thousandths but if you are feeling lateral movement like you say you are you definitely have a bushing problem.  The hinge pin is not the culprit, trust me.  If it sounds as though I speak from experience let me just say that I am in the middle of the rut in south Georgia and am hunting with a borrowed rifle as mine is at the factory getting repaired right now.
