I am considering a Savage 111bns in 7mm-08. I want the 7mm-08 caliber. but I have also considered the model 7 and the model 70 as well as the Model 700 mountain LSS. I plan to use the rifle for primarily whitetail in pennsylvania and west virginia. How would you compare the aforementioned models to the Savage, taking cost and quality both into consideration.

The 7mm-08 is one of my favorite whitetail cartridges out to 200 yards.  Sure, it can be used at further ranges, but I don't shoot further than 200 yards so I really can't give you first hand experience with such long shots.

As for all the guns you mentioned, your best bet is the Remington Mountain LSS.  One heck of a gun.  I just love it.  I would forget about the M7 because it only has a 20" barrel, and I like barrels of at least 22" on standard cartridges, and 24" or better on magnums.

I've hunted with a 7-08 for years.  I can say without question this round will take deer at 300 yards.  As with ANY gun it depends on who is behind the trigger when you start shooting at those ranges!  Bottom line is the gun can handle it if you can.

That's why I said 200 yards only because that's the longest shot I have taken with that cartridge.  Sure, I wouldn't be surprised if it could be taken at 300 yards.

Like I said, the 7mm-08 truly is my favorite whitetail cartridge.  I own 2 of them and will probably buy a 3rd really soon!
