Custom Shop barrels in .17 HMR ??
« on: June 15, 2004, 04:49:58 PM »
Anybody have experience with a custom shop .17 HMR barrel?
Trying to decide on whether to buy a barrel for my Contender or a complete bolt rifle.
Just wondering what kind of accuracy I could expect with a Contender barrel?

I have a custom shop 24 inch 17 HMR carbine bull barrel. It is great. It will put 10 shots in one hole at 50 yards every time I go out. I always take it out. It is my favorite barrel. I would not spend the extra money on a VV or bullberry barrel over the T/C custom shop in a rim fire. Center fire is a different story. T/C does not do a great job on center fired chambers. Every barrel is a chance. I have both in other center fire calibers. That is my 2 cents worth. Twyman

had a run of 16.25" barrels. The one I got is very accurate and it makes a real nice buggy gun

Why go custom shop? The new std barrel is 23" full bull. And from tests I have read, and some of my own, thats too long. 18-19" is supposed to be the optimum length any way. I have 2 std barrels, one is a 14" pistol. The other is a 23" that has been shortened to 18" for a carbine setup. Both will shoot under 3/4" at 100 meters on a calm day easily. My daughter used the carbine on a prairie dog trip a few weeks ago and it was fantastic out to about 225yds.  KN

OK,  thanks very much for the info and opinions.
By the way, what scopes do you folks have on your .17 HMR?

I used a Simmons "ATV" 4x16x40 from Walmart. $130 and well worth the money. I have several of these scopes and they have served me great. Very clear, AO, Cross hairs are not fine but they are not too big either.  KN
