30-06 BAR Problem
« on: June 15, 2004, 10:50:59 AM »
I am having an annoying problem with my '06' BAR shooting a rising shot string from low to high left shooting a 100 yd target for 5 shots. Does anyone have any in-put. My scope is tight and mount screws are 'doped'. The same thing happens with hand loads or Core lock 150 or 180 loads, boat tails. :? Thanks for your thoughts. Oh yeah- this is from a bench using  sand bags.

Possible Considerations

Hello Log Eye,
I would offer the following suggestions:
1] Insure that all the screws in the firearm are tight. My Remington 7400 does not shoot well when the forestock screw is loose, even backed out 1/4 turn.
2] Give the rifle a little cooling down time between shots.
3] Try to determine if there is any difference in your shooting positioning or in the gun to bag relationship between shots. Uniformity of this relationship can influence bullet placement.
My two cents offering. Good luck.

First, like targshooter said, let your barrel cool a bit between shots.

Second, when all else fails, try Sierra SBT Game Kings!

I had been loading Nosler Ballistic Tips, 180grn & 165grn, in my 30-06 BAR and quite frankly would have been glad to get a virticle string or any other kind of consistent pattern.  They just shot all over the place.

Someone suggested trying the Game Kings and now she is shooting well under MOA.

Hello:  Well I'm no expert here but I would suggest you see how much upwards pressure the forearm beeding point is putting on the barrel.
On the BAR it's only a section about an anch , inch & a half long - but it may be enough to be putting excessive pressure up on the barrel , and thats what causes upwards shot stringing in conventional rifles I know.

You will have to loosen off the front sling swivel and then carefully with a small wrench - 9mm I think it says - and see how much spring there is in the forearm when you loosen it off.
You may have to sand a bit of wood off to ease the upwards pressure , consult a gunsmith in your area first tho , thats always a good idea...

Let us know how you make out.

Regards ,
Bob
