Author Topic: Just got a Cur dog (Read 810 times)

I just took possession of a 9 month old Cur. Havent got the papers yet, so im not sure of his bloodline or breeding. He is the most intelligent and handle-able dog i think i have ever owned. He come when called, even off a scent. He uses his nose plenty. He doesn't pull on a leash or check cord. I have never had a treeing dog that wasnt a bear on a leash! I didnt know how to act when he left slack on our first walks. Figured once we got into the woods he would go ape and start pulling like crazy to get at the squirrels. Nope, calm as a kitten. Only took up the slack once he saw the squirrels in the park, but still didnt pull, just used all of his leash. Previous owner said he was started on coon and squirrel, so ill see how he does and which he likes best. Any training suggestions, please drop me a line. My training consists of showing the dog the target animal in a cage or trap and maybe turning it loose for the dog. Then get him in the woods as much as possible. Let his instincts take over.

He is a ball of fire on squirrels. Havent gotten him into the woods much in the last month, due to other pressing issues. He is about a year now and seems to have the idea well in hand. He trees good, and barks fair. He barks four or five times then whines for a breath or two then barks a few times then whines for a few seconds then barks, etc, etc. He watches timbering squirrels real well and barks the whole time they timber. If we cant see a squirrel or if he trees on one that he didnt chase up there, he isnt real solid on tree, but the ones he was or can see he trees real good. Follows scent pretty well, but not well enough to leave me standing at dens all day.

I am more than pleased with how he has turned out with my limited training time over the last two months. I show him the right way once and he gets it. I have even worked with calling him off a slick tree or a circle points tree with "Cant get it" command and he doesnt go back to em. Now that impressed me to no end. Only took two or three lessons for that one.

Wow that sounds great! Very impressive. Mine aren't all that great, although I'm not that good/experienced when it comes to squirrel hunting anyway. My dogs (2 Kemmers) are basically all instinct. I have a heck of a time pulling 'em off, once their on. They just loose their head and are completely zoned. What stock of dog do you have?

You would be amazed how many people don't realize that there is such a thing as 'cur/feist squirrel dogs' or just how a good squirrel dog works the woods, the squirrels and turns them on a tree.

Hope that your cur pup is everything that you want......!!
