Yeah but they were in a campground and while he shouldn't have walked over to take photos he was a fair distance away. As far as the park service recommends I believe. The old bull was just in a bad mood.

One ranger remarked on the news, that it is a season when bison are "territorial"..

The federal, and Yellowstone regulation for minimum distance from a bison is 25 yards or 75 feet. Bison are very agile and you would have about 2 seconds to react if one decided to charge at that distance. To me its kind of stupid to be anywhere near that close unless you were near an open car door. At least once a year you hear of someone getting mauled by a bison trying to take photos. Its like a hold my beer moment. Watch this, I'm going to get a close up photo of this 2000 pound bull bison. Lots of times there are consequences for being stupid.

My neighbor, about 3 miles away, has a bison farm...probably keeps between 100 and 200 head.

I notice that when he goes out in the winter to feed bales of hay, he stays above ground, stepping from tractor to sturdy wagon and back.

Each time I go by on my way to my recreation acreage, I notice they seem quite docile and don't give my vehicle a second look.

So, one day I stopped by and in conversation, asked him how they may receive a stranger in their pasture..

He said it depends upon the day.. One day they may completely ignore him, while the next day they may decide to use him for a soccer ball !

News report tonight said the man was around 100 yards away when the bison decided to go chase him. They were in a camp ground not out in the wilder parts. The bison just wandered into the camp ground and considered it his.
