First " pet parents" now " plant parents" ?
« on: March 11, 2026, 10:56:43 AM »
What's up with that ?

I was talking with someone about gardening,
and I heard the proud " plant parent" thing
.mentioned.
Have so many people just lost any concept
of reality ?

The absolute only way to be a parent is to
a human child.

Well, they screwed up the pet animal situation in a great way..so now i guess it is "on to the plants'...

I presume that most here have noticed how veterinarian costs have sky rocketed over the last 10 years or so.  Not just the cost of individual treatments or drugs,
but the treatment in it's overall scope!

...Back when I was raising, hunting and competing with dogs, if I wanted a shot for my dog, I would go to the vet and get just that shot !

Now it seems that if you need anything for your pet dog, cat or squirrel, you must go through an extended procedure, costing an astronomical rate.

Have you been to the pet supply aisle in your local store? A rawhide chew or a small bag of chews that cost a buck or two a couple years ago...now hoes for 5 or 10 bucks.

I  blame most of that on pet "mommies" or "daddies".. Perhaps it is just part of the purple haired mommies or the skirt wearing daddies, phenomenon...

IF some one's gardening is for showing or competition, treating one's plants with that much attention is how one can or will be successful.
I have read many articles on person who raise plants for this reason and YES, they do baby that plant/s, as under normal conditions rare is the plant that is exemplary among other plants without special care.

Gardening is no long some thing that every one simply does because it has always been that way.
I belong to several gardening forums and many who have done their whole lives are saying it is getting to be too much, and their children do not it.

There is/are a number of articles, and books, on Raising plants, or even gardens, beyond the norm.

Some around here raise those huge pumpkins competitively.  I understand they only allow one pumpkin per vine, and feed them much milk, among other things..

..But I still consider that to be eccentric. :D ;D

That's a nicer description than what
I was thinking of
I have relatives that IMO are one notch
off of loony about their pet " babies "

I'm of the opinion that the coping gene
was bred out of people sometime after
I was born someway somehow

Perhaps because I was raised on a farm, I learned very early to be able to 'cut the cord' when some animals had to go.

Admittedly, some of my dogs were closer to my affections than a cow or chicken...but I still retained the sense that they were not humans, nor kin by DNA..

Yeah
I've had dogs and other pets die and a few that
were intentionally killed by useless pinheads
that made me feel pretty bad, but all in all
they're animals.
People who intentionally kill another's animals
are criminals IMO
