  The old Beetle was probably the most illustrative of the oft mentioned people's car.

  I drove them for years, and had almost no issues..no "recalls" no high technology failures..  Parts availability exceptional. If you didn't  want to buy from VW themselves,
   there were a plethora aftermarket suppliers. 

   The entire exhaust/muffler system was a one piece affair. If I didn't get to the dealer to buy my system, I could get one from JC Whitney for $19...

  Did almost all my own maintenance and/or repairs, right at home.  Sure, the heater wasn't very effective..but then back when the Beetle first made it to these shores
   in 1950...VW owner weren't the only ones who were using ice scrapers inside... :D ;D
