338 WINCHESTER MAG IN AN ENCORE
« on: March 24, 2004, 06:15:17 AM »
Does anyone out there own a 338 win mag in an Encore.  I have run across a barrel and the owner wants to get rid of it real bad.  It is a 26in heavy barrel. Who has some experience with this caliber in an Encore.

I have a 26" E.A. Brown 338 Win Mag barrel with muzzle brake for the
Encore and it shoots real nice. I feel it recoils less than my 7mm Rem Mag.

I just bought a Encore in 375 H&H that shoots great and kicks greater! The 338 is an excelent caliber but I have never shot one in the Encore so I can't help ya there! But if the price is right and you want a 338, I would get it! Good luck! :D

If you decide you do not want it, please let the person who has it that I would be interested in it.

I have a stainless Encore muzzleloader in .50 cal.  I ordered a 30-06 barrel for a whitetail hunt in Tennessee last fall, I was a bit surprised with the recoil from this gun in this caliber.  javascript:emoticon('')
javascript:emoticon('')   Far more than I expected, using pet loads from my Handi 30-06.  I also own a TCR-83, the one with set trigger.  I have a .338 barrel for this gun.  I have owned this barrel since 1992, just haven't got it out of the box and shot it till yesterday.  I was pleasantly surprised with how it shoots.  Yes there is lots of recoil, but it is managiable.  I do not have a brake on this barrel, and after shooting it yesterday don't plan on adding one.  I was thinking about getting a .338 barrel for my Encore for a 14 day float trip in the Brooks Range, but have decided to take the TCR instead.  Actually I had forgotten all about the TCR till I was looking for my .243 Handi, last week.  While looking in the vault seen what looked like the end of a .243 barrel in the back of the vault and pulled out my TCR with the .243 barrel on it.  Took it on a snowmachine trip instead. javascript:emoticon('')
javascript:emoticon('') After taking a long shot at a Wolf (400 yards) realised I had forgotten how sweet this little gun was to shoot.  Once set, just a slight nudge on the front trigger fires the gun.  I'd guess 1 to 1 1/2 lbs.  If you don't use the set trigger it takes about 3 to 4 lbs to fire.  Only drawback is getting the heavy belt over the extractor with out passing the extractor groove.

Range Report and Observations.  Today I took my TCR with .338 barrel to the range,  Sighted in the scope by placing barrel in varmint rest, centering on target at 50 yards, then adjusting scope to same point.  Fired one shot at 50 yards, Dead Center.  Raised scope 2 clicks, shot 3 rounds at 100 yards.  All 3 touched 1 inch left.  Made adjustments, moved to 200 yards.  Fired three more rounds, 1 1/2" group Center of target.

The only problem was getting the Belted Magnum case past the extractor.  I forsee the same problem with Encores.  When inserting the cartridge into the chamber the belt hangs up on the extractor.  By pushing down on the extractor I can get the belt past, but have to be careful, or the case drops into the chamber past the extractor.  Rifle won't close till I remove the case and place the extractor in the groove.  Once fired extraction is easy, just grasp the case and pull.  Like I said I can forsee the same problem with the Encore and any Belted Maginum case.  If someone shoots and Encore or TCR with belted cases let me know if you experience the same problems.  Rog

I got a 26", 338 Mag barrel from Bullberry a few years ago. It's a good shooter 1 MOA with hand loads. Recoil is less than my Win Mod 70 in 300 WM. I have only shot 200-225 gr bullets though. The 250 grainers should up the recoil a bit.

BABore: Do you have a problem with the belts on the rear of the cartridge hanging up on the extractor?

Sourdough,

I have had the extractor ride up over the groove or rim. Maybe once or twice over a couple hundred rounds. I didn't consider it a huge problem though. Just watch how you load and leave the action do most of the work on closing. It seemed to help to leave the pad of my thumb contact the extractor as I was pushing the round in.
