MY TARGET RIFLE
« on: May 13, 2022, 02:48:59 PM »
I really can't remember if I told about this rifle.
It's a Remington 581, with an aftermarket heavy barrel, the action was threaded and the barrel screwed in, it has a Timney trigger measured in ounces, it has a second action screw in front of the trigger guard, the action is glass bedded, free floating all the way to the action and, a wooden butt plate.
It is very accurate.

No I bought the rifle from a fellow in Virginia who I believe was selling off an estate.
The work was done by obviously good gunsmith.

Looks nice. Bedding looks a pro job. Can you tell what type of barrel?  Chamber pre engrave the bullet?

Always liked the predecessors. 540X and such.

Have a 1958 USMC 40X rimfire around here somewhere.

A very nice 22. I'm glad to see  someone posting here as 22 rimfire is my favorite of all calibers to shoot.

Yeah, on a full 40 grain bullet it engraves the nose but on 38 grain blasers it doesn't.
I can't find any markings on the barrel but since Green Mountain sells a jillion barrels a year that's probably what it is.
And that 40X is a whole different animal.  They are still winning matches.

Mine too.
I also recently bought a 10/22 for myself and I had already bought one for Nancy and set it up as a "black" rifle.
She loves it.

Plus, I bought her a few 10 round magazines and couplers along with two 25 round magazines and a loader which makes loading easy.

I had started shooting in the RFC online matches but they changed the format after they sold the site and I haven't been back there for a while.

I wonder if there would be enough interest here to start an online match??
And I wonder if Bill or Matt would create another forum for that if folks show an interest??

It could be set up with a couple of categories, field rifles and those rifles that are too heavy to carry in the woods.
And of course .22 rimfire only. (22lr and 22 magnum.

Bugeye. Guessing many guys may not have access to a range. All I got at the house is 100yds.

In any event, you have bragging rights. Challenged anyone and everyone to a .22 rf match and no one wanted to shoot against your 581. :)

Heh, I'd guess most here have field weight rifles and they wouldn't be shooting against my 581.
And in field weight I'm guessing that Drilling man's ULA would take top honors.
I've had my 10/22 for several months and have yet to pull the trigger on it.

You get your heads together and decide what targets, the more difficult targets for heavy rifles like my 581, the distance is usually 25 yards so that low powered scopes can be competitive, 22lr or magnum only.
Targets can be downloaded from the web and printed or bought from Walmart, the participants would decide.

That's kinda how it would work, you take a picture of your rifle, target, and ammo box and post it.
Just one per month.

BTW, Drilling Man would probably win both categories with his ULA. :)

My Anschutz is a pretty good shooter too,

I've never shot it on paper at distance to see just how good it really is though.

Sounds good.
How about it folks, any more takers??
If we had two more folks we could get started and I would beg Bill for a online match forum.
I figure four people's input could come up with some rules.

Is that okay with you rancher??

These days offhand at 25 I need an elephant for a target. Bad shakes.

The way I shake I couldn't hit my house from the inside offhand. ;D
The shooting would be from the bench at first, maybe branching out later.

At one time (years ago) I did some pretty good shooting with my hunting chair and a card table and the tailgate on my truck.
I'll admit I'm rusty right now.  We've done more traveling than shooting.

Sort of a maybe. There’s a deep gully at 50 yds with the backstop at 100yds. Shoot pistol closer at swinging targets but not sure it’s a full 25yds. Have to check.

Bench is best for most folks. A good target design would have sighter bulls. 25 yds means good rifles and ammo will print very, very close. Sanctioned bench rest matches shoot one round at one bull at 50 yds to avoid “controversy”.

Heavy weight paper and good backing material make for better scoring. Many good commercial targets available. Some folks have printer scaling issues with on line targets and they can’t be made with a cell phone. Shooting groups is always problematic when it comes to scoring.

Every bench rest org had challenges defining rifle classes. Some scopes will have parallax issues at 25 yds and then there’s the iron sight folks.

IDK, whatever makes most sense for the most people. Just some thoughts.

I’ll follow along and see how the rules develop.

Some good thoughts.
The scoring at RFC was made simple by allowing you to score a bullseye as long as the bullet touched the black around the bull.
That allowed good scores by squirrel rifles.
The heavier rifles had stricter scoring.

Only if you shoot backwards using a mirror like Annie Oakley. :)

I've always wanted a ULA southpaw, but just couldn't justify that much money when I had a fine Lakefield classic.
