Pickups are becoming the new performance cars.

New models designed for off-roading and the street are being equipped with incredibly powerful engines, and the competition is about to get fierce.

Ram is launching the most powerful production pickup ever and there are even more potent electric models on the way next year. Here’s a look at what’s on sale and what’s to come in the horsepower wars among gas and electric trucks.

Ram 1500 TRX: 702 hp

It finally happened. Ram borrowed the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that was originally launched in the 2015 Dodge Challenger and put it in a full-size, off-road pickup where it sends 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque to its 35-inch all-terrain tires.

Ford F-150 Raptor/Limited: 450 hp

Ford is allegedly working on a 750 horsepower off-road pickup of its own, but the current Raptor has a 450 hp 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 with 510 lb-ft of torque that’s also available in the luxurious F-150 Limited.

Ford F-Series Super Duty Tremor

The Tremor is the only truck with an engine named after a monster. The rock-crushing Tremor -- available as an F-250 or F-350 -- features Ford's new 'Godzilla' 7.3-liter V8 that's rated at 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque.

(Chevrolet)

The 6.2-liter V8 that powers GM’s light-duty pickups is related to the one used in the Corvette and Camaro and puts out a muscular 420 hp backed by 460 lb-ft of torque.

Tesla’s bizarre pickup will arrive late next year with three electric motors in it – one up front, two in the rear -- that Motor Trend estimates will generate a combined 800 hp. Whatever the final number turns out to be, Tesla promises that the full-size truck will be able to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 2.9 seconds.

HUMMER is coming back in a big way in late 2021 with its own three-motor model that will have 1,000 hp and extreme off-road capability to match.

I could probably never afford a ram "hellcat" but I sure wish they would put the 6.4 in a half ton rebel. That would make me a happy man. The 5.7 is a snappy motor but that 6.4 has it beat hands down in low end torque. Something trucks have been lacking in. They make them with good hp but give up torque to get gas mileage. Even stock gearing is a joke. When I bought my ram I bought it with the offroad package because of two things. An electric locker and 391 gears. Now a 6.4 with the same gears would be an animal. A 700 hp supercharged pickup would be fun to play with but if you actually worked it like a farm truck my guess is youd be leaving parts all over on the ground. Plus ill bad mouth them because I cant afford one and envy those who can ;) But for me maybe 4 years from now when all the big bills are paid off a 707 hp vehicle might be in the works. But it will be a hellcat challenger to replace my 6.4 challenger. Don't really need a 700 hp truck.

I really don't believe anyone needs a 700 hp truck or for that matter car for highway use. Yeah lots of folks want them but they don't need them.

My Tundra is supposed to have 381, well below what all the trucks in this article have and I can't imagine why I'd want more. I've never called on it to do anything it wasn't plenty powerful enough to do.

I don't exceed the posted speed limits, I rarely drive over 55 even if the speed limit is higher. I don't dray race or do any other kinda racing. It's rare that I pass another vehicle whether on a two or four lane road.

Long ago such would have been attractive to me, now such HP does nothing for me.

yup bill and who needs more then three guns or a gun as powerful as even an 06 to kill deer. Its like you said a want thing and I think of it like this. I raised a family and worked hard and skipped the things I wanted for the things I needed. Now if im lucky I have 15 years left. If I want it I going to have it. Im not conserned with dying with money in the bank. My wife gets my pension, she gets my social security and gets my va pension and has va benefits for medical so she sure doesn't need anything either. She likes to travel and I detest it. So if she wants to go on a cruise I say have fun and if I want a toy she says go and buy it. Kid and grandkids can fight over whats left when we die. If they want money they can sell my toys. Lifes to shot to just get by on what is needed. Like I read once. Life is a game and the one that dies with the most toys wins. Only regret I have is that I couldn't buy them earlier in life. If someone else gets there kicks out of a big bank account and is happy with a prius then that's there call. First day the wife and I went for a ride in my 6.4 challenger and I ran it though the gears I told her I was a stupid man for waiting this long. If it was all about need like I said nobody would be buying guns, boats, Harleys, 4 wheelers, campers, vacations and the list goes on and on. A glass of water a tent and a can of spam takes care of NEED. Lifes to short for that.

No argument from here Lloyd, if ya want it and can afford it then I say go for it.

Fast cars, trucks, motorcycles or such just isn't a turn off for me. I've owned one hot rod of a car long ago when I was a young man. I went way too fast and luckily lived thru it.

Now I never use the acceleration my Tundra can deliver unless I pull out and realize I should have waited and let that card pass first. It's nice at such times tho such times are very rare. Speed isn't my thing. Guess really it never was all that much.

I get the things we want and enjoy the things that have meaning to me, big HP and speed just aren't among them for me. I understand it is for many and don't begrudge it to them.

I recall a few years ago you posting about a side by side you had, can't recall the brand or name but you posted several times about how fast you ran it. Me I have a John Deere Gator that maxes out at 28 mph and it's very rare I get even close to that.

It takes different things to make us each tick.

ya bill I had an 800 razor back then. Fast in its day but NOTHING compared to the new 900 and 1000 or some of the can ams yamahas and even Hondas today. Heck they have a john deer that would run with it today. It put out like 45 hp and the new 1000s do well over a 100 and the turbos half again that much. But the price went up on them too. I paid 12k for mine and it was decked out with about everything. Nephew just bought a can am turbo and paid over 25k for it. I had fun with mine but im a dog guy and like to be able to take the dog and the wife along for a ride. I paid 22 k for my 2015 wrangler that has 270 hp and can not only ride at camp but I can drive it there with the ac on and the dog the wife and a pile of guns. Might not be as fun when I have the "need for speed" but it covers most of what a side by side is good for. If I was buying today and I might  sometime in the future id look at something like a ranger 1000. It seats 3 can haul not only ### but actually haul stuff. I think there like 80hp which is double what my rzr put out. Maybe I am getting old. I drove that can am turbo and the thing will take your breath away. Its sure no rig for someone that stops at the bar!!

Way back when I bought my Gator I looked over what was available. I chose it cuz it had about the largest bed with the most weight capacity and towing capacity of what was available at that time.

I've never had a trailer to carry it around anywhere so it has spent it's life right here on my 6 acres of land helping me get around from one end to the other and hauling the tools I use to work here. I've hauled all sorts of stuff, dirt, gravel and rocks in the bed. These days the bed mostly just hauls around tools as I have a John Deere 4044 tractor with a bucket so any digging or hauling gets done with it.

To me it's a tool just like the brush loppers, shovels, rakes, hoes and other tools I carry in the bed of it all the time. I don't have much walking or work left in me these days and often when working down in the orchard I get so worn out and out of breath that without it I don't know that I'd get back to the house. Me and the wife get in and ride down to the pond at the front of our land to sit and enjoy the view and see what kinda critters we can see that day.

It doesn't need to be fast cuz a trip is rarely more than 200 yards and many are no more than that round trip here on my place. If I were buying a replacement today the only thing I'd want to change is to add power steering.

That's the one and really only reason I might trade off my Gator for another. I'd really like to have power steering. When moving along it really makes no big difference but at my place I don't have far to travel each trip so a lot of my time is going real slow and having to fight that steering wheel isn't fun at my age.

I've owned the Gator at least 10-12 years I'd guess, don't recall just when I did buy it. I only have a little over 100 hours on it. Heck the tires still have the nipples sticking out on them and you can barely tell there is any wear on the tires.

I think I have over 250 hours on my new tractor which I've had at most 2 years.

I can put twice as many miles at a time with power steering vs wrestling with one without. You notice it even more if you ride slow like you do. not only steers much easier but it takes the jerk out of the wheel or handlebars when you hit a pot hole or deflect off a rock ect.
