Joining the ranks of the MORE traditional...

Ordered me a .75 Cal. Brown Bess Flinter today.  I have heard a few mixed reviews on these, but several in a row they are mostly positive.  I am really looking forward to chucking out some 595 gr. round balls.  ;)

Blew my wad just getting the gun.  Figured I can add a bayonet later.  ;)  Balls are quite expensive for these though, so thinking I'll be buying me a mold soon.  lol

true.


a mold for that rod is a must-have
one would think.
but then, in the interim, you can
figure out some good shot loads
for it (if you can find shot :( )

Yep, I ordered 25 balls with it and have about 1000 .22 cal round leads that I can play with and some #6 shot.  ;)

Well, I'm pretty thrilled with it so far.  Lock seems a little on the weak side and sometimes has to be cocked and fired a few times before getting me a good spark, but some may be user error in getting the flint in place right.  I fired off about 11 shots today as I worked up a load that shot to about 30 yards where I aimed with my bayonet lug as an improvised front sight.  I'll try to get a picture tomorrow of the thing, but that puts a LARGE hole in what it hits.  ;)  I worked up from 60 gr. starting to 90 gr. and 90 was the best for accuracy at 30 yards for me.  If I can get the lock being a bit more consistent I'll be pretty happy.  I haven't played with shot too much yet, but hope to this next week.  ;)

Man, flints are SHARP!  Since starting to play with this I've cut myself like 4 times.  I'd always heard that chipped flint was super sharp, but dang...  Learning to move more carefully around that cocked hammer now.  lol
