Handi 500 S&W cast bullet ?
« on: December 07, 2012, 06:27:39 AM »
I did a search and couldn't find what I was looking for....so hopefully someone may know.

I recently traded for a 500 S&W barrel and have since gotten a Lee 500 S&W bullet mold. I was wondering what others have seen as far as needing to resize thier cast bullets from this mold for thier Handi's. Does it cast a bullet that will fit on yours without resizing?

Just trying to avoid buying a .501 sizer if I don't need it as this is the only 500 I have.

Thanks!

shot great for years....with  ''as cast'' boolits
but  ammo wouldn't chamber in other guns.....some times

ten  i got my lubri-sizer... and  .430.the bullets stated tumbling in the handi
.430....then  i got the .431 sizer....now ammo is good for ALL my 44s

If it will chamber as cast, shoot it, size it in the bore on the way down range!  ;D

Fit it into a fully fire formed case mouth, if it is just a tad tight for a finger fit, good, as long as it chambers up and extracts. If you have to resize the case it might undersize it for jacketed (pretty common) so it will kinda size the cast bullets down too as you seat them. They still may shoot OK; just gotta try it to see.

maybe get one of THESE, as I have heard the ones for the 45 colt work very well for 45cal rifles.

you can adjust them just so, to get the amount of crimp you need.

+1 on the Hornady TCD, I got the best accuracy of all loads I tried in my 500S&W Handi after crimping with the Hornady Taper Crimp die.  ;)

I have been shooting the Lee for some time. The bore size is NOT a problem, however, SOME cases seem a bit thick and cause them to chamber tight. I have not had any problem with Starline, but some of the Magtech brass was thicker on one side. I would bet that you can drip lube them and they chamber without force they will shoot just time. I suggest you crimp them just enough to take any bell or flare off the case mouth. Since I use my sizer to lube mine anyway it does not matter, but there is very little sizing  that takes place as the bullets are just about diameter to start.
I have recently found out that Lee also makes an "Improved Minnie Ball" mold that is .500 dia that is used in muzzle loaders, it is 360 gr. I purchased one, but have not had time to test it yet, I plan to use it as a plinker load. You might want to check that out also.
