Opening night results
« on: October 17, 2012, 02:21:38 AM »
Well, we had a semi productive night for the coyote and fox opener.  The new moon, low wind, and cool weather brought almost perfect condtions- almost.  We have alot of crops still in the fields out here and I was very limited as to how many stands we made- a total of two.  Both stands brouight in animals.  First stand I FINALLY called in and sealed the deal for a friend to score a red fox.  I have been trying to do that since I got into this game.  Second stand a coyote managed to get down wind of us (I really have no idea how), and gave us the ole/ busted barks.  Sorry for the lack of pictures.  My friend doesnt like his photo posted.  Trying to talk him into blacking out his face...

Was the Fox photo shy? How was it's fur? Neighbor kid shot one the other day, out of season I believe ::)  but it had some mange. I didn't see it, another neighbor told me about it. There was one laying in the high grass in my back yard the other day and don't think it was the same one but didn't get a good look at it.
Take along a grocery bag for your buddy to put over his head. Or Halloween's coming up I bet you could find him a mask ;D
Glad you got out and was successful the first time ;)

The fur was pretty good, it was a young one though.  And the problem with the kill was that he shot it with a 223 and a 60gr HP.  Ewww.  He is going to have it shoulder mounted though, as the back third of the fox was pretty much a mess.

Glad you had some success, I think we are in for a good calling season this year. Get back out there and put some fur down.

Your picture reminds me of the "feelthy peectures" we used to look at as kids where there was a black bar across the people's eyes so you couldin't recognizee them. ;D

I see it was his first pred. hunt, great way to get him started. Glad you got the blackout to work. He's probably a Seal, Celebrity, or Criminal ;D

Downloaded with a different bullet would probably work on both within a 100 yds. in a 223 but you don't know which critter will come in and how far and switching cartridges would likely bust you. Guess you have to take what you get.
A guy wanted to take me to a spot he had with fox but he planned to use a 243, I never went. I'd have probably took a Hornet with him. Been thinking of trying a 17 Fireball.

What call/sound brought the Fox in? Thanks

Great way to get him started - and he now knows exactly how small of a target a fox is.  Good shooting on his part.

Believe it or not, i was finishing up the stands with some coyote pup ditress whnes with the hand cal when the fox popped out of the corn heading down wind.

I am going to return to the area with my 22 mag and some 40gr hollow points and really target on just fox.  Light calling close to cover.

Never really hunted fox much, just the accidental targets of opportunity. I've heard that reds act almost like a coyote does as in circling down wind of a sound source. I know squat about grays, but I've heard they are pretty squirrely.
