Range trip today...
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:53:31 AM »
Hello guys,
Beautiful fall days here this weekend. I loded up the GMC yesterday AM, picked up my hunting buddie and we headed to the range... Well that did not work to well. There was a bench match going on... My bad for not chacting the calander before I left.  :-[

SO yard work was the order for yesterday. TODAY is another story!!  ::)  Got to the range at 10AM and just missed first relay of fire.

I brought a 45Colt with a new to me 1x20 Nikon Buckmaster scope, My shorty maxi W/a 3x20 Leupold M8 scope, My Marlin 1972 vintage 45-70 W/Nikon 2x7x32 scope, My Colt 357 W/2X Leupold M8 and a couple Glocks.

All of these had scopes reciently remounted or moved so re siting was necessary. The Marlin was first, I sited it with my handload of 4198 powder, (still load) a Fed case, CCI LR primer and a 400g Speer SP Bullet. I chronographed this loading some years back and its right at 1900 fps.
This is the last three shots at 100 yards.

Right after I shot the Marlin the range god really busy, so I could nto get the targets as often as I like for pictures OR chronograph either...  >:( >:(

The Maxi was next, my old loading of 26g of AA1680 and a 180g SSP bullet in RP Brass shot about 2" at 100 for me today, What suprised me was it was about 1/2" high at BOTH 50 & 100 yards.
Then I tried some 180g Black Talons. These are 357 Mag loadings at 50 yards.

Next was the 45 Colt H&R with the 1X scope... MAN O MAN, @1 power, the X hairs are almost 2"wide at 50 yards AND cover nearly 6"at 100!!!  :o ::)  I loaded up SR powder at Ruger level loadings with a 225G FTX bullet.
.Then the 45Colt and I was rewarded with some good shooting loads with a SR powder I have not used for the 45Colt before SHOULD get me 1400 fps form the longer barrel. MAN these shoot well!! I was easily 2"at 50 yards and 4-5 at 100.

Now I brought out the 357 Colt at 50 yards, well, I forgot my 140g Loads at home on the bench... BUT I had brought some old 145G Silver tips so I shot theose. They shot pretty well too. I was able to get some pics of these..

Then the G20 shooting this was more for working loads than for auccaracy.

SO if I need them, the 45Colt and Shorty maxi are ready!!  ;D ;)

Love that Marlin!! You'll do. Just wondering, did you ever get to shoot any of those heavy 35's, did they work at all?

That is some shooting with the Marlin ;) Varmint hunters would be jealous of such groupings, well under .5". I do know what you mean by the cross hairs on the 1X covering up the target. I had the same issues with the 1.3X I have been using on my 44 Mag. The cross hairs were completely covering the 2" orange dot I was shooting at. I was guessing at the cross hair placement. It makes you wonder if your group is really shooting that way or you could do better with a little more magnification. At any rate, a 2" group at 50 will be a dead deer at 100.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Morning guys!
I dont remember heavy 35's? Sorry refresh my memory..  :-[ :-[   YES the Marlin has always been a good shooter, but until now its always had a 3fixed three or four power scope. Now with a 2x7 I can SEE!!!  :) ;D '

I just went through the same thing with my new .243 Handi.  I plopped a Bushnell Banner 1-4x32 Circle X on it and the bullseye was gone :o I changed up with a Bushnell Trophy 3-12x40 duplex and hello, it was back.  Bright clear and sharp out to 300 on 12X.

You were nice enough to just send me some 357 brass when I was looking for some and not getting any responses. You mentioned you needed some heavy 35 cal bullets, which I did have some- 280 gr cast, for a 35 Rem test or something and I sent you a box of them. Just wondered if they were useable. Thanks.Timothy.
