225 FTX vs 265 FTX - 44 mag terminal performance.
« on: September 18, 2012, 06:27:05 AM »
I know the 225 FTX will kill deer. I killed one last year at 10 yards, but never recovered the bullet to see the actual expansion. Has anyone ever seen what the expansion properties are on deer size game out of a Handi 44 mag using the above bullets? Has anyone done any actual hunting with 265 FTX out of a Handi 44 mag?

At what range would you think the heavier FTX would be useful before it shed too much velocity to get adequate expansion? Same question for the 225 FTX. Please assume about 1800 to 1900 fps for the 225 FTX and about 1600 to 1700 fps FTX at muzzle, and assume center mass shot.

I appreciate your responses.

Dunno, but the Hornady 8th lists the muzzle velocity range for the 225gr FTX as 800-2000fps and the 265gr FTX as 1300-2300fps.  ;) The 225gr FTX 44mag ammo averages 1760fps in a 22" Handi.

EDIT: I just noticed they list the 225gr FTX in the pistol bullets as 900-2200fps!  ::)

I can tell you that the 240 XTP at 1,100 fps from a revolver opens to nearly the size of a quarter
