How to install XS Ghost Ring on H&R 30-30 Handi
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:31:02 AM »
I just bought a new H&R 30-30 last week and want to install the XS Ghost Ring Sights. I have the sights and the instructions just as well be in Japanese !! I cannot make heads nor tails of what it is they are saying to do. It says use numbers 1, 13, 16, and 2 and none of it makes any sense to me except where to put the rear aperture with the ring. Don't even understand how to do the front sight. Don't know if anyone has used these but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much gents !! P.S. I want this to be my heavily wooded short shot no scope rifle.

Modern 30-30 Handis have screw mounted front sights, the XS Handi sight set that Midway sells is for a dovetailed front sight, you'd need to add a 3/8" dovetail ramp to use it.

The current sight will likely be too low for use with the XS rear sight if it's mounted on the chamber swell, you need something like this in the correct height to make the XS front sight mountable, or a taller bolt-on front sight. Perhaps a call or email to XS would help.

I see now what it is I need, thank you again. I'll call XS Sights to see if they have the part I need otherwise Brownell's has a Williams ramp that would work. I've never done anything with the sights like this before, but I want this 30-30 to be my no scope heavy wooded short shot rifle. In Texas you could be sitting in a spot where a 40-50 yard shot is all you have or across a 500 yard pasture, LOL. Anyway got the long shots covered and am excited to get this gun to the range. Got 4 boxes of Hornady LE with 160gr and the 22 inch barrel so will be happy to see what the chrony says they are doing. Hopefully I can start loading my own ammo soon, slowly gathering up all the stuff I need and will work up a 125gr or 130gr boat tail of some kind for the 30-30. Take care sir !!

Ok, so now I feel about as dumb as dumb gets. I call H&R to specifically ask and made sure I said the screw size for the front ramp and it has just one screw. So, she says #6-48, WRONG !! After this I called XS and told them I need the front ramp for my gun because the gun just hast a straight blade single screw, no dovetail. OK, sir no problem. I get it and spend saturday cleaning the gun and getting it ready for it's first trip to the range. Time for the XS Ghost Ring now, The screw size is not a #6-48, it's smaller and now I can't put the ramp on that XS sent me for an additional $28.00 I might add. Kinda surprised about that, seems like they would send what you need to install the thing, but whatever.  I just want it on at this point ! Does anyone know what size this screw is, could it possibly be a #4-48 ? Or is it a #8-40 ?  Thank you all as always especially to Mr.Quickdtoo !

I think you'll find the screw is 3-56.  ;)

Quick sir, do you by chance have another screw size in mind. I bought 3, 3-56 screws and none will screw in. Threads seem different and their small and I'm old with old eyes, LOL. But none of the 3 I bought will screw in, I'll try to give another call to H&R and see what they say but the first time they said it was a 6-48 and that's for the back. I need screw size for the front sight. I'll give XS another call as well and see what they say again.

If it looks to be the right diameter but a different pitch, it could be 3-48, if slightly bigger in diameter try 4-48.

Yep, it's definitely got to be the 48 thread, the original threads are farther apart than the 56. I also think it apprears to be the #4 as well but I will get both 3-48 and 4-48 to be safe. Thank you again for all of your help. Also I saw a post where you said you had a Handi that was 30-30 AI ? How did you get that, a whole new barrel special made or rechamber ? Thanks !!

I rechambered a 30-30 Handi barrel by hand, see the GBO Reamer sticky.  ;)
