8x57?
« on: May 16, 2012, 06:41:22 PM »
Hello citizens!
I just recently picked up a K98 and will eventually roll my own for it after collecting enough brass to begin with. I was wondering iff'n any of you fine gents would be so kind as to stear me in the right direction of a good load combination that you may have discovered.
The intent will be for the odd hog at ranges less than 150yds and coyotes at the same ranges. Don't care about pelt damage (they ain't worth nothin no how) and not really concerned about slinging the biggest chunk of lead out there either.
Here she is.

 Thanks in advance
Chupa

I have found the speer 200gr SPT with ramshot Tac powder at about 2450ps is a very accurate load.

I'll have to look through my loading notebooks, but I worked out a good load with the speer 150 hot core and IMR 4895 for my sporterised 98, I can't remember the exact dosage.

Mostly I shoot a 185 cast gas checked flat nose with arount 17-18 gr of 2400, just like Georgeinohio, once I got a few brass, they filled my plinking and jack rabbit needs just fine.

I'll post up when I find the load, or the loaded cartridges, the case guard has a note of the recipe within it.

Mine likes 175 180 grain bullets with win 760.  Never could get 150s to stabilize at all.  Also had to cut about 1" off the barrel and recrown because someone wore the rifling out cleaning it.  You probably want to slug the barrel as well because some of the older ones (I don't know which ones maybe someone else knows for sure and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) had a .318 bore instead of .323.  Enjoy the gun, I love mine even if it is an ugly beater/truck gun.

The older model 88 had a .318 bore. The model 98 - which the OP apparantly has, sports the .323 bore.
Great cartridge, by the way. Does anything a 30-06 will do, hunting-wise.

I'm stuck on a max load of 4064 and a Sierra 175 Spitzer or Speer 170 RN.

Both shoot sub 1" @100 and chrono 2800+ fps

Mine is also a K98 sporterized back in the early '50's. Its a great caliber!

I buy 185 grain Corelokt bullets in 500 count packs from Midway. The best deal and this bullet is a good performer on big game. Reloader 15 is my powder of choice. I bought a cut off die and convert quantities of 30.06 brass into 8mm Mauser.

I meant to suggest this too...

I used mil '06 cases to make 8MM cases too!  I like to use the mil bacuse they are not caliber marked. SO you need to make that extra step and identify what you have. I try to use military cases anytime I need to form a case for just this reason. But a very good secondary reason is many military cases are of excellent quality as wl as many times thicker and heavier then Commercial offerings.

BUT truth be told, any 25/06,270,280,30/06 or 35 Whelen can also be a 8mm with a bit a lube a trip thru a 8MM sizer and couple minutes on a trimmer.

I have been told these 185's are excellent in the '57 but have yet to try any.
