Max is hungry but have no 1680
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:32:11 AM »
Where is all the 1680 at? No one has any. local dealers for accurate has got a shippment every two weeks for the last two months with it on his order form and the say backordered. Even cabelas and the large shops are out. Anything else work as well. With high speed and low pressures or is that it.

well a phone call to the manufacture and they tell me that they are out of stock and have been for some time. they have been told that they are expecting to have it in the very beginning of June and will start shipping it soon after. First the brass now the powder next the mag will be taken out of the handi line up.

I used 4227 because I had it.  Also tried 2400, but not as accurate so far.  Found both powders listed mfgr site for maxi.

DH1,

I ordered a pound of 1680 about three weeks ago from a tiny Mom and Pop reloading store (link below).  It didn't come in the week it was ordered but it did the next week.  They claim to sell a lot of powder (they receive a shipment every week) and I believe he reloads ammo for sale as well.  Best to call them, the shop is a classic disorganized Mom and Pop shop with stuff everywhere.

Good luck.

I have good results with H110 powder, it does not have a large range between the min and max charges but it shoots  extremly good in my Max and Mag loads as well.

I've been using H110 or 296 because I can't get 1680. They shoot well in my rifle. I've been thinking about trying RL7 and IMR4198 because I have lots.  I forgot to put 1680 on the list the last time I did a large primer/powder order on line.  I'm too cheap to pay a 25 dollar HAZMAT for a pound of powder and I don't need anything else.  I have 2400 and 4227 also, but haven't tried them in the Maxi.

Like Jeepman I use H110 and have had no problems at all. Work up your load slowly, as it starts getting hot pretty quick. I shoot a max load with no pressure signs using a 180 gr. Hornady SSP. Bang-flopped a deer last season at 76 yards, so no complainants!

Here is a question i pose than regarding w296 then. Hornady lists the 180 xtp max of 21 grains. I am using the 180 spp bullet. The length from the cannelure to the base of the bullet is much shorter than that of the xtp which to me should I would think would allow more room for powder when seated to the cannel without any gain in pressure. For the people that are using it have you went above the 21 grains with this powder/bullet combo. I was thinking of working up and trying to max out at about 22.5. which is still not compressed

I'm curious to what the answers will be for the W296 and the SSPs.  I have 100 of the 180 gr. bullets and W296.

Have any of you guys tried lil'gun?

Tried just a few rounds of 23 grs. Lil Gun with the 180 SSp's  not enough to make any kind of judgement but seemed to shoot OK

I use nothing but Lil' Gun in my max Handi rifle, it works really well.
