I guess my bottom line would be that a person should use what they like and what they are comfortable with.  I think there is a little bit of a psychological component involved in rifles and cartridges and the person selecting and using them.  Like me-no one can convince me that there is a better varmint cartridge out there than the 22/250 even though I know for a fact that a .223 and others are just about as good.  As I said-it's probably psychological.  I love my 45/70 Handi.  It just simplifies things for me and I enjoy carrying it whether I get a shot that day or not.

So--whatever one likes.  Enjoy and be safe.

  I think you have a valid point there Dave...one that is probably true with many of us concerning our "favorite" cartridge. ;)   ;D

Here in Indiana the choice would be simple. The 500 is legal for deer, the 45/70 is not.....

demented what is the weight of  the ftx bullet ?.the 45-70 is one of my favorite shooters.

I have not shot a deer with the FTX but the last five I shot went into one inch at 100 yards.  I shoot them with 35 grains of IMR 4198 and they print dead on at 100 and if I up the charge to 44 grains or so they are not too far off at 200 with the same sight setting.

The 45-70 is the way to go.  If recoil is a problem simply use Trapdoor loads.(Remington Factory Loads)  Very mild, and with practice can reach out well beyond 100 yards.
