Just Wondering: 445 Ultra Mag?
« on: May 12, 2012, 03:51:51 PM »
An idea, but I just don't know if it is possible. Could you use 44 Mag rifle barrel and ream chamber to accomodate the trimmed down 30-40 Krag case. It would only lose the neck and shoulder. Case is sligthy tapered, but could be sized in standard 44 Mag dies.

Your probably asking why not just get a 444 Marlin. Short answer is the 444 M is not deer legal in Indiana. 445 Ultra Mag at 1.8 inch case length would be. It would seem that this would be a very achievable and relatively easy custom project. Realize this would need a SB2 frame to mount the barrel for pressure reasons.

Anyone see any holes in this idea?

The case length for the SuperMag is approx 1.61 inches if I am understanding the cartridge specs. What I am looking to do is get the case length out to 1.8 inches. Granted .2 inches of extra case length would provide some additional room for powder, just not really sure if that would make a big difference relative to 445 SM performace? Would it be worth it to try and see? I know I would have to modify the 30-40 Krag brass pretty heavily to get it to work. The only reason maybe to just say, "Hey, I got a 445 UM"  8)

Just dreaming up some future project ideas that may or may not happen. Maybe I should just get the 30/30 and ream it out to 30-40 Krag. There I go again... ;)

So, basically a .44 cal version of a .460 S&W mag?

Sounds cool, but brass would be a little work.

I have .445 SM brass made from .30-40 Kraig.  I don't know how much more work you'd have getting two tenths more out of it.  The other thought I had was how much is to be gained?  Are we at the point of diminishing returns?  I guess you'd have to try it to see.  To me, the .445 is comfortable to shoot as it is.  If I have a desire for pain, I can always drag out the .500 heavily loaded. :'(

What reamer would you use to lengthed your chamber the 0.2"?

Even if the 445 chamber would allow a 1.8" case, the throat is going to be the limiting factor, you'd have to throat it as well to take advantage of the addition chamber length, in my 445 even the 240gr XTP is into the lands at 2.020", the 265gr FTX at 2.252". So not only do you have to extend the chamber for the case, the throat has to be lengthened too. Personally I'd buy a 444 Marlin(1:20" instead of 1:38"!!) and shorten those cases instead, or even better, buy a 35 Rem and either shorten them or spend the rechamber money on a 356/358 rechamber and shortened rounds as has been reported in the Indiana forum, then you'd have some real return for longer range shooting. ;)

Well after reading through the responses and giving it some more thought it appears there would be little to no real advantage to the 1.8" 445.  ???  I guess I just got to keep trying to come up with something unique and cool and deer legal.

The 35 Rem and rechamber avenue keeps getting mentioned so I might explore that. The only issue there that I can see is finding a 35 Rem barrel. I don't see them in the barrel accessory program and getting someone to part with one maybe a little difficult. I guess I'll keep checking the FS and FT boards for one to pop up. I am assuming a 357 mag barrel will not work nor a 35 whelen barrel for that matter?

A 357 mag barrel could be rechambered to either a 35 rem or the 356/8 Win.  FWIW, I have been working with a 1.8" long 35 Rem Cartridge loaded to 35 Rem Super levels and the results are promising.  With 35 grains of RL7 and a 200 grain Hornady RN I am getting 2,270 FPS out of a 22" barrel.  Accuracy is minute of bowling pin at 200 yards.

The 35 Rem barrel has never been on the acc barrel web page just like several other barrels that are only listed in the new acc barrel sticky, you'd have to check with Brian for availability. The 357mag makes a great 35 Rem(or 356/358) mine started life as a Mag>Max.  ;)
